Back in October, the island of
Mindanao was rocked by a nightmare that lasted over several days, as part of the
main southern portion of the Philippines. Extensive property damage (including
a significant mall fire in GenSan) plus landslides became a source of misery
for people particularly in Central Mindanao. It is known that among those who
came down to the quake stricken areas to lend a hand with the refugees was
ABS-CBN actress Angel Locsin, an action that earned her great public approval
on social media. Earlier this week, a major magazine even paid tribute to Angel’s
actions by listing her among Asia’s heroes.
And judging from Angel Locsin’s
reaction days after her philanthropy was featured in Forbes Asia, she was ever so humble about the appraisal of her
actions as reported on ABS-CBN News.
This reaction makes the 34-year-old Kapamilya star stand out more from her
contemporaries in the “Asian Heroes 2019: Catalysts for Change” feature by Forbes. She is accompanied there by
China’s Jack Ma, Indonesia’s Theodore Ramchat, Malaysian Jeffrey Cheah, Azim
Premji of India, Australians Andrew and Nichola Forrest, and Judith Neilson,
and fellow Filipino Hans Sy of the SM family. Many of these mentioned were
millionaire business magnates except Locsin.
“I’m nowhere near from being a
billionaire, but I try my best to do my part in my own little way,” noted Angel
on her Twitter page post while referencing the Forbes Asia article. “I hope this would inspire other people to
help as well.” She also expressed her surprise that the business magazine would
mention her, noting that her assistance to the earthquake victims in Mindanao
was mere her expression of the Filipino cooperative tradition of “bayanihan.” Then
again, aside from her physical presence to help distribute relief goods in the
area last October, she also donated P1 million.
I never thought @ForbesAsia would ever mention my name, lol. Thank you! Filipinos have always been known for “bayanihan”. I’m nowhere near from being a billionaire, but I try my best to do my part in my own little way. I hope this would inspire other people to help as well. https://t.co/e6tnCcSc1k— Angel Locsin (@143redangel) December 4, 2019
It should be noted however that
Angel Locsin has long been established as one of the most charitably generous
actresses in Philippine showbiz. Over the past decade or so her donations to
charity programs for education, indigenous peoples, and women and children’s
rights have amounted to P15 million in all. And her personal relief
distribution efforts following the Mindanao earthquake is not unique. Locsin
did the same during the 2017 Marawi siege. And the best part is that she sees
her charity work as a human accomplishment, far from the larger-than-life
superheroes like Darna that she has portrayed on TV.
“You don’t need to wear a costume
to be a superhero,” says Angel in Forbes.
“The only motivation we need is being part of humanity.”
