Ever since its first installment
all the way back in 2001, the Universal Pictures vehicular action franchise “Fast
and Furious” has thrilled audiences across an ever-increasing number of direct sequels
and one spinoff. Not even the passing of one of its main stars during
production of the seventh movie has halted the series’ momentum, carried by
co-originator Vin Diesel and a stellar lineup of action stars like Dwayne
Johnson and Jason Statham. While the themes of “Fast and Furious” are
relatively mature, involving activities from organized car theft to global
terrorism, the property was deemed cool enough with general viewers for a new, younger-skewing
spinoff to be developed for streaming.
And that is the origin of “Fast
and Furious: Spy Racers,” an upcoming 3D animated series spinoff of Vin Diesel’s
cash-cow starring franchise, to be shown digitally on global streaming giant
Netflix. According to IGN, Universal
Pictures and its production partner for “Spy Racers,” DreamWorks Animation, have
released both a teaser and a batch of promotional images to introduce the new
vehicular action series to fans of the overall property, before its official
Netflix debut just next month. The show focuses on a newly-revealed relative of
Diesel’s character Dom Toretto, and his own high-speed adventures.
“Spy Racers” will introduce Tony
Toretto (voiced by Tyler Posie of “Teen Wolf”), a young cousin of Dom’s, who
feels most at home on the road with his trusty car and his own early/mid-teens racing
crew. Things take a more exciting and dangerous turn when, just like his cuz
Dom, Tony is recruited alongside his team by a government agency. Their mission
is to investigate and infiltrate an extreme racing circuit that is suspected to
be a front for the ruthless international terrorist organization SH1FT3R.
The voice cast for this “Fast and
Furious” spinoff is also a surprising who’s who of talent, ranging from film
and stage stars Luke Youngblood (“Harry Potter”), Jorge Diaz (“Paranormal
Activity”) and Renee Elise Goldsberry (“Hamilton”), to veteran voice actors
Grey Griffin (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) and Fred Tatasciore (“Gears of War”).
Also a notable addition is Vin Diesel’s own daughter Similce Diesel, in what
can be construed as the beginning of a true generational involvement in this
long-running franchise. The short teaser also showcases intense car racing and
battling action that would not be out of place in the mainline “Fast and
Furious” films, something fans can certainly appreciate.
“Fast and Furious: Spy Racers”
premieres on Netflix streaming this coming December 26. It should tide over many
franchise followers who are still waiting for “Fast and Furious 9,” scheduled
for release in May 2020, in a follow-up to the ongoing antagonist arc that
began in “Fate of the Furious.”
