With the release of “Avengers: Endgame”
and “Spider-Man: Far from Home” last April and July, respectively, three whole “phases”
of interconnected movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise by Disney’s
Marvel Studios came to an end after some eleven years. But the story does not
end there. Also on July, Marvel Studios came to the 2019 San Diego Comic Con
with info on the release schedule for the next batch of MCU films in “Phase 4,”
announcing at least six feature-length films and several more connected series
to stream on Disney+. And then, before more can be known about these movies’
productions, Disney dropped more MCU release dates last Friday.
As Empire tells it, on November 15 last week Marvel Studios revealed
additional dates set a few years from now, when audiences could expect new
superhero movies set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to premiere. Whether
these dates are a part of the MCU Phase 4 overarching arc, or the schedule for
the follow-up Phase 5 has not been specified during the announcement. Said
dates are the following: October 7, 2022; February 17, 2023; May 5, 2023; July
28, 2023; and finally November 3, 2023.
To review, the previously
confirmed MCU Phase 4 release dates from SDCC earlier this year include “Black
Widow” (May 1, 2020), “The Eternals” (November 6, 2020), “Shang-Chi and the
Legend of the Ten Rings” (February 12, 2021), “Doctor Strange and the
Multiverse of Madness” (May 7, 2021), the third MCU “Spider-Man” solo film
after this year’s “Far from Home” (July 16, 2021), and “Thor: Love and Thunder”
(November 5, 2021). “Black Panther II” has also been earmarked for May 6, 2022,
although whether it belongs to Phase 4 or 5 has not been clarified. It is
likely that the new dates could correspond to several other MCU movies and
sequels said to be in development.
With the five new blank release
dates, any one of them could be slotted in with certain Marvel Cinematic
Universe installments such as the MCU reboot of vampire hunter “Blade,” “Guardians
of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Captain Marvel 3” and “Ant-Man 3.” Also a possible and
hotly anticipated addition is the long-awaited MCU “X-Men” movie that would
reunite the mutant superhero team, whose cinematic versions were handled by 20th
Century Fox separate from the other settings until the studio and its film
rights were acquired by Disney just this March.
The rather sparse MCU Phase 4
movie lineup could be attributed to the development of related exclusive online
series to stream soon on Disney+. These include spinoff follow-ups such as “Wanda-Vision,”
“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” “Hawkeye,” “Ms. Marvel,” “Moon
Knight,” “She-Hulk” and “Marvel’s What If?” All these shows are expected to
premiere for stream starting late 2020 through to 2021 and 2022.
