“MIRACLE IN CELL NO. 7” Trailer Scores Views; Cast Member Predicts MMFF Win for AGA MUHLACH

Filipino remakes of foreign films are not what one might call a regular occurrence, so a lot of interest is usually generated when local studios give their own Pinoy interpretation to a movie from another country. One such remake to look forward to this year is “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” based on a heartwarming and tear-jerking South Korean drama about the familial love between a parent and child in the midst of injustice and impending death. This iteration, produced by Viva Films, stars Aga Muhlach and Bela Padilla in what is shaping up to be a potential winner at the Metro Manila Film Festival.

As The Philippine Star has it, that positive prospect for Viva Films’ “Miracle in Cell No. 7” is being proudly predicted by its youngest cast member. Xia Vigor, who is playing the daughter of the main character, a mentally handicapped man portrayed by Aga Muhlach, is certain the veteran actor’s skill in the role will net him the Best Actor Award for the 2019 MMFF. “Yes, that is my feeling,” says Xia, who precociously remarks that the Filipino “Miracle” remake will make audiences cry just as easily as its original Korean version. The 10-year-old British-Filipina child-star adds that she too genuinely cried while filming scenes.

From the reception of the first official trailer for “Miracle,” viewers quite agree that the movie is an emotional roller-coaster ride that will touch the hearts of its audiences, especially families. On Facebook the trailer video has garnered 12 million views, along with over 2 million more views on YouTube. So extensive has been the reach of the trailer video that Ryu Seung-ryong, the Korean actor who starred in the original film, also shared the preview on his Facebook page. On his caption Ryu wrote that he was “So touched to know that there will be a Philippine remake of Miracle in Cell No. 7.”

“Miracle in Cell No. 7” stars Aga Muhlach as a developmentally-challenged father to a young daughter, who is arrested after being wrongfully accused of abducting, raping and murdering another young girl, the daughter of a corrupt ranking police official. The victim’s father exploits the suspect’s simple mind to make him confess to the murder, landing him in a maximum security prison where he wins the hearts of his hardened inmates, who then help to reunite the father with his daughter. What follows is a tale of love, hope and justice in the face of despair.

This offering from Viva Films also stars Joel Torre, Tirso Cruz III, JC Santos, Mon Confiado, Jojit Lorenzo, Soliman Cruz, and John Arcilla, based on an adapted screenplay by Mel Mendoza del Rosario. “Miracle” will premiere alongside its fellow MMFF 2019 entries on Christmas Day to early January of 2020.
