Info from LOIS, Exec-Producer on “SMALLVILLE” Crossover on THE CW “CRISIS”

When The CW decided that their latest crossover event for their stable of DC superhero series will be called “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” after the epic DC Comic event that set up the comic-book story continuity which ran from the late 80s to 2011, they knew that the network had to do more than mash the alternate universes already featured in their shows’ previous seasons.  That meant trying to feature a wide variety of heroes and settings from past DC productions as well. One of the most anticipated call-backs for audiences would be the retu
rn of iconic series “Smallville,” and the initial images of the stars on “Crisis” are awesome.
As Entertainment Weekly tells it, “Smallville” lead stars Tom Welling and Erica Durance, who played Clark Kent and Lois lane in the 10-season show which is considered the “spiritual” predecessor of the present-day “Arrow” verse, will feature in the “Batwoman” episode of the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover storyline. This was revealed in the blitz of promotional images released by The CW ahead of the event’s start next month. A few of them feature Welling’s Clark and Durance’s Lois at the Kent Farm, with the former dressed in farm work-clothes.

While Welling has not been active in any DC-related production since playing the teen who would be Superman from 2001 to 2011, Durance at least has a footprint in the “Arrow” verse due to playing Alura, Kryptonian mother of Kara Zor-El/Danvers/”Supergirl” (Melissa Benoist). She is even reprising as Alura on the “Supergirl” episode that will kick off the storyline. It still came as a surprise to Durance that the producers would call on her to be Lois again years later. While initially apprehensive at the crossover scale, she has been impressed at how the “Crisis” writers are keeping the various timelines straight, and is thus more excited at getting to act together with Welling again.

“It was just easy,” notes Erica Durance on her scene with Tom Welling at the Kent farm set. “It was like coming back in and working with family. It was a little bit bizarre because we went back on somebody else’s show, but we’re in a set that we’re familiar with, the farm and all those things. So it was very, very cool.” It should be noted that the “Smallville” farm set location was later reused as the rural home of Tyler Hoechlin’s Clark/Superman and Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois from the CW “Supergirl” series, designated Earth-38 apart from the Earth where “Arrow” and “Flash” take place.

“Crisis” crossover executive producer Marc Guggenheim was just as excited to see the “Smallville” leads’ reunion, doubly so since their appearance on “Batwoman” (starring Ruby Rose) will be handled by familiar hands. Show-runner Caroline Dries and writers Don Whitehead and Holly Henderson also worked on “Smallville” in the past. “Every turn, every nuance, every little choice is just so perfect,” Guggenheim says, “As a fan of the show, it answered a lot of questions that I had. It provided a lot of closure, I think, in a really nice way.”

The “Batwoman” segment of “Crisis on Infinite Earths” is the second in the crossover sequence, airing December 9 on The CW, after the event starts on “Supergirl” the day before.
