It has been said that playing the
part of iconic DC superhero character Superman on the big screen tended to
bring bad luck to the actor involved. The object lesson to that superstition
was Christopher Reeve, who struggled with typecasting and ultimately an injury
that paralyzed him from the neck down. Brandon Routh of “Superman Returns” seemed
to follow suit in a dearth of roles following his portrayal of the Man of
Steel. The “curse” no longer seems to hold however, given how British actor
Henry Cavill came out just fine after three Superman outings in the DCEU. He
even got into a major Netflix original production some time later.
And while he might still have
greater recognition for being Superman in “Man of Steel” (2013), “Dawn of Justice”
(2016) and “Justice League” (2017), it is for his Netflix series that Henry
Cavill is making his way to Manila next month according to The Manila Bulletin. Said streaming series is “The Witcher,” based
on the juggernaut Polish multimedia franchise that originally began as fantasy
books by Andrzej Sapkowski that also got adapted into a long-running videogame
series. Cavill stars as the main character Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter
and witcher (male witch) travelling across a continent in constant chaos.
Such has been the increasing
popularity of Netflix original series in the Philippines that several stars and
creators from these shows have started making this country one of their stops
on their promotional tours. One notable case of this, months ago, is the dark
comedy-drama “Insatiable,” the second season of which was hyped by its lead
stars in the Philippines. It also helped that former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz
was also guest-starring in the series as a caricature of herself. Cavill’s
promotional event for Netlfix’s “The Witcher” will be on December 12 at the
Ayala Malls Manila Bay Activity Center.
Henry Cavill’s leading role in
this show is somewhat similar to Brandon Routh, who has found new popularity in
the TV-based DC superhero setting of the “Arrow” verse in The CW. Routh will also
reprise his Superman role during the Holiday crossover event “Crisis on
Infinite Earths,” also starting December. “The Witcher” is being developed for
Netflix by Lauren Smith Hissrich. While its debut on the global streaming giant
is still on December 20, the series has already been assured of a second season
two weeks ago on November 13.
