ABS-CBN may have the lion’s share
of licensed local versions of numerous international reality talent
competitions in the Philippines, but they never sit on the laurels of
established franchises. The network giant is always experimenting with
something new, such as the weekend “2-in-1” singing/dancing talent show “Your
Moment,” which premiered over a week ago on November 9. A collaborative
production with a media company from the Netherlands, the competition
introduces some techie innovations such as the judges providing periodic scores
in real-time during performances and a revolving “immersive” talent set. On its
third episode, aired November 16, a Mindanao all-girl dance troupe and a singing
duo that were cut from other ABS-CBN singing contests seized their moments with
audition victories.
Diadem, a dance group from the
University of Mindanao as well as Binary, a singing duo, became the stars of
the evening in last Saturday’s episode of the singing-dancing reality talent show
“Your Moment.” This airing was the third part of the initial “Your First Moment”
phase of the competition, where six acts (three singing, three dancing) would
perform for two minutes before the three-judge panel of Billy Crawford, Nadine
Lustre and Boy Abunda. Each act is scored in the middle of the routine thrice, their
final score being averaged.
For the dance portion of the
contest on November 16, Diadem came out on top. The dance troupe is composed of
female students from the University of Mindanao (UM) in Davao City. What drove
the group to try out for “Your Moment” was their desire to prove their dancing
skills to be the equal of male dance teams. And their average score of 95
proved that true. The judges praised Diadem not just for their go-getter
attitude but also their performance, described as both “classy” and “hard-hitting”
in equal measure.
Over in the singing half of the
show, the act that would advance to the next stage was a triumphant comeback of
sorts for the members involved. The aptly-named Binary was formed by two
contestants eliminated from other ABS-CBN singing competitions. But Khimo
Gumatay (from “Tawag ng Tanghalan” of “It’s Showtime”) and Archie Aguilar (“The
Voice Teens”) would both prove that they still have more to give the second
time around. Billy Crawford and Boy Abunda opined that their cover of “Kathang
Isip” by Ben&Ben made the song their own instead, especially with their
vocal shifting. Nadine Lustre, who knows that both Gumatay and Aguilar wrote
original songs, expressed interest in hearing their compositions sometime.
“Your Moment’s” initial period of
“Your First Moment” will run for a few more weekends yet, before seguing into “Your
Moment of Choice,” where the first-round passers will challenge one another in
a new round of three-way contests in singing and dance. So far, two foreign
acts have participated in the competition, with Indonesian entry The Dens
Gonjalez winning on episode 2 last November 10. The Sunday (November 17)
episode saw Verse Band advance for the singers, and Streetacy doing likewise
for the dance acts. “Your Moment” airs on Saturday and Sunday nights on
ABS-CBN.
