A week ago, on the last Wednesday
of September 2019, Fox once again put American reality singing competition
audiences in a guessing mood when the second season of their very unorthodox
contest “The Masked Singer” premiered. With the network a bit more confident
that the premise of unmasking anonymous singers when they are eliminated will
draw viewers, the number of contestants has been upped from 12 to 16, while the
September 25 premiere saw a double-length start with two eliminations at once. This
Wednesday, the guessing games continue as four more masked singers went
onstage, and a third was ousted.
USA Today tells us that for the second week of “The Masked Singer”
season 2 on Fox, four other contestants from the pool got to compete in
sing-offs for the first time, following the eight that got first crack last
week. For week two, the contestants were Black Widow against Leopard, with the loser
of their face-off having to take on whoever came short between Flamingo and
Panda. Returning judges Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin
Thicke started making their guesses on the four, based on their interview
pieces and performances, with some fearless predictions being thrown about.
Black Widow would beat Leopard on
the first face-off. Guesses on the former’s identity ranged from Amber Riley of
“Glee” fame, to Cardi B due to her brief twerking maneuver. Leopard actually
caught the panel by surprise, due to looking feminine but belting out Queen’s “Somebody
to Love” in a man’s voice. He lost out to Black Widow’s “I Wanna Dance with
Somebody” however. On face-off 2, Flamingo belted out “Sucker” by the Jonas
Brothers which won against contestant 4, Panda, who sang Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger.”
Predictions for Flamingo posited that she was quite possibly a singing group
member, like with Destiny’s Child. Panda on the other hand was pegged as a
female athlete, either Venus Williams or Ronda Rousey.
Now at risk, Panda and Leopard
would take on each other in the Smackdown round. Here, Leopard channeled the
late Aretha Franklin with “Respect” and ultimately prevailed over Panda’s
rendition of DJ Khaled’s “All I Do is Win.” This soung choice pretty much
reinforced the suspicion of being a sports-woman, and it was confirmed when,
being eliminated, Panda unmasked to reveal herself as boxer Laila Ali, daughter
of the late great Muhammad Ali. Incredibly, she had been the first guess by Robin
Thicke when Panda came on, though he said it was merely a joke.
Hosted by Nick Cannon, season 2
of “The Masked Singer” airs Wednesday evenings on Fox.
