It has been quite some time
already since Ogie Alcasid joined the largest stable of Philippine
entertainment talent as part of ABS-CBN. Since then he has been a prominent
presence on the variety scene, particularly on ASAP where he and wife Regine
Velasquez are part of the powerhouse ensemble of singer-presenters that
dominate Sunday noontime on Filipino TVs. He has also served as a Judge on a
number of Kapamilya competition programs. But there is one ABS-CBN gig he has
yet to get into: playing a role in long-running drama anthology series “MMK.”
This coming weekend, that item will be crossed off Ogie’s to-do list.
As ABS-CBN News reports, Ogie Alcasid will indeed not only be part of
the episode cast for this coming Saturday’s episode of “MMK” or “Maalaala Mo
Kaya,” he is the lead star. A trailer shared by the weekend program on its
official Instagram account shows the singer-actor-host playing the role of Carlo,
a financially-strapped family head barely making a living as a puppeteer and
clown for hire despite his sheer enthusiasm for what he does. This brings him
in conflict with his pragmatic and disapproving father, who foretells grave
consequences for Carlo and his house if he does not relent.
Despite the hardships of their
finances Carlo is somewhat supported in his endeavor by his wife, portrayed
here by fellow singing-acting veteran Vina Morales. But even her understanding has
limits, and when their own son disparages his father for his poor career choice,
the ensuing friction threatens to tear their family apart. Carlo is determined
to tough it out with his life’s calling even as he cynically agrees with what both
his father and child say. When a further life-endangering tragedy strikes, can
Carlo still muster the will to keep on struggling with the world?
“MMK,” named after the Constancio
de Guzman song song interpreted by Dulce (with a recent cover by Carol Banawa),
has been part of the weekly TV viewing experience in the country since ABS-CBN
launched it in 1991. Since then, host Charo Santos has delivered a
near-innumerable number of thought-provoking drama anecdotes from both letters
sent by ordinary Filipinos, and original productions depicting the lives of
famous celebrities and recent historical events. In an interesting
retrospective, Ogie Alcasid’s co-star Vina Morales was part of the 1991
premiere of the show, acting opposite episode star Romnick Sarmenta. The latest
“MMK” episode airs on ABS-CBN on October 5.
