First “BOND25” / “NO TIME TO DIE” Poster Fails to Impress

When British actor Daniel Craig first appeared on the big screen as James Bond in 2006, audiences were initially skeptical. For a few things he did not quite look like past Agent 007s, being blond and shorter than the average. But he won critics over with his emotional depth despite playing a reboot of the character that was not yet quite the suave lady-killer superspy. Fans got to see his evolution from “Casino Royale” to 2015’s “Spectre.” But all good things come to an end, with Craig reprising Bond one last time in the franchise’s 25th film which has its official title known to all.

Now as The Hollywood Reporter tells it, the official “James Bond” website and social media pages have revealed the first promotional poster for “Bond 25,” or as been known since late August, “No Time to Die.” The movie itself has both firsts and lasts for the long-running film series. As stated, it is the swan song for Daniel Craig’s time as the world’s most famous British secret agent. It is also the first installment with an American director, Cary Joji Fukunaga, at the helm. It should be a momentous period in the franchise, which is why the first poster sort of let fan expectations down.
Said poster, revealed over the last weekend, depicts Craig as Bond in the character’s trademark tuxedo, walking along an old building wall. The title “No Time to Die” is displayed in an extra-large font that partly obscures Bond’s chest. Some comments on the Instagram account of Universal Pictures UK expressed disappointment at the simplified poster design, which was compared to adding type over a photograph that was barely even modified. It was deemed a far cry from the artistic treatment given to say, the “Spectre” poster from several years ago.

Poster letdown or not, “No Time to Die” is still poised to win over fans with its initial plot summary for the final Daniel Craig Bond starrer. It notes Agent 007 having retired from intelligence duties in Jamaica, only to accept a request of assistance from his old CIA contact Felix Leiter. What was a simple rescue of an abducted scientist instead uncovers a new terrorist mastermind with dark designs for the world, and who may have connections to the other threats Bond has confronted in his past. Movie details were shared since June to deflect concerns following an accidental explosion on set and controversy involving a hidden camera planted in the studio women’s bathroom.

Daniel Craig is joined in his last hurrah by regular supporting cast Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Ralph Fiennes. They are joined by Jeffrey Wright, Rory Kinnear, Lea Seydoux and Rami Malek. “No Time to Die” premieres on April 2020.
