It can be rather surprising to
see how much media producers plan ahead of things, when it comes to TV shows or
franchised works in general. Fans of Marvel Studios’ epic Cinematic Universe
can appreciate how they got the casting done for major characters in their next
superhero films way before premiere, and with other movies still in the line
for release. Netflix has been one of those entities following suit, such as
with their historical drama series “The Crown.” Its third season will premiere
this November, but casting is already underway for the fourth. And one of the
new S4 casting auditions will certainly delight fans of “The X-Files.”
Entertainment Weekly has confirmation of news from back in January,
that American-English actress Gillian Anderson has indeed been cast for season
4 of “The Crown” on Netflix, which is already in production even as season 3 is
about to debut on the global streaming platform. Anderson, who is likely most
famous for her leading role on the Fox sci-fi drama juggernaut “The X-Files,”
will likely be taking on a new memorable character for this series by playing
UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the starting years of her leadership term.
Concrete proof of her involvement
in “The Crown” was put up Saturday, September 7, on the series’ official
Twitter page. It showed a photo of Anderson with a caption highlighting her
excitement to be part of the production. She thanked the cast and crew for
giving her an opportunity to portray such a “complicated and controversial
woman” as the first female British PM. “Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but
I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and, dare I say, falling in love
with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era,” noted Anderson.

Questions on whether or not
Gillian Anderson can pull off portraying a British character are easily
discarded due to the fact that the 51-year-old actress, though born in Illinois
in 1968, has lived just as long in England, is bi-dialectic, and actually a resident
in London. Playing a historical character with a divisive legacy also comes
across as a challenge for Anderson following her long-lasting tenure as a “reluctant
believer” FBI agent, with the 11th season of “The X-Files” having
aired only in 2018. Other notable roles were in NBC’s “Hannibal” and Starz’ “American
Gods.”
“The Crown” kicks off its third
season on Netflix this November 17, and will introduce new actors and actresses
playing older iterations of the characters from seasons 1 and 2.
