Operating a charitable social
welfare program, especially for children, can have significant financial costs,
even if said program is but a part of a larger corporate organization like
ABS-CBN. One source of funding the network devised was to allow its talent
training and management arm, Star Magic, hold annual balls featuring the many
film and TV stars under their umbrella, which of course also translates to more
exposure for the Kapamilya Stars. After several years this yearly ball/charity
event has become one of the big banner events in the Philippine entertainment
industry. This year, the Star Magic Ball has simply become the ABS-CBN Ball,
and with its rebranding comes even bigger spectacles from participating
talents.
ABS-CBN News reports that that the 2019 ABS-CBN Ball, which took
place Saturday evening on September 14, not only lived up to the hype of its
Star Magic-branded predecessors but went beyond all expectations. That is to be
expected however, as aside from the expected charity event where donations are
given to the Bantay Bata hotline, this ball also coincides with the
commemoration of the 65th anniversary of ABS-CBN in providing entertainment
and service to the Filipino. Also on the mind of everyone at the event was that
it was a tribute to Bantay Bata founder, the late Gina Lopez.
Fans were not at all disappointed
with most of the entire Kapamilya talent stable appearing that Saturday night. The
Ball, particularly the buildup to it, is also heavily anticipated by the
country’s biggest names in creative arts, fashion designers and stylists, who
would be able to showcase their latest formal wear concepts as patronized by a
powerful parade of ABS-CBN’s top stars. With the 2019 ABS-CBN Ball’s attire
theme of “Modern Filipiniana,” they would not disappoint. Kapamilya talents
went and strutted familiar Barong Tagalog and Maria Clara/Terno ensembles all
glitzed up to modern fashion trends.
The names of the designers
involved are greatly familiar to the stars and followers of Filipino high
fashion: Rajo Laurel, Jo, Rubio, Michael Leyva, Albert Andrada, Francis
Libiran, JC Buendia, Joey Samson, Gabbie Sarenas, Nat Manilag and more
according to Metro.style. And their
work was highly appreciated by wearers and observers, especially those who
served as couturiers to the love teams, from the classic ABS-CBN pairings of
yesteryear (Marvin-Jolina) to the power couples of here and now like James Reid
and Nadine Lustre. Fans must have certainly gotten a kick out of the
red-gold-blue tricolor sash that wrapped around James’s suit and slipping
inside his left collar, partly covering a chest without an inner shirt.
Not everybody in the Kapamilya
circle could make it to the ABS-CBN Ball. While Liza Soberano was present for
her first big social event following her finger surgery, Angel Locsin pointedly
skipped out, with her Instagram page explaining that she was directly donating
what money she would have spent on new clothes and accessories for the
one-night annual event to Bantay Bata 163. While she does not begrudge her
fellow stars’ decision to glam up in addition to their charity pledges during
the Ball, the former “Darna” felt her donation will make a difference in a
child’s life all the same, in the spirit of charity exemplified by Gina Lopez.
For the curious, here are but
some of the other Kapamilya tandems that have graced the 2019 ABS-CBN Ball this
past weekend: Mayward, Kathniel, Lizquen, plus other luminaries like Jericho
Rosales, Albert Martinez, Piolo Pascual, Charo Santos, Bea Alonzo, Richard
Gutierrez, Coco Martin, Mylene Dizon, Pia Wurtzbach, Cherry Pie Picache, Nyoy
Volante, Vice Ganda, and so much more than these. In the end, Bantay Bata got
some heavy donations, the legacy of Gina Lopez was remembered, new fashions
were showcased, and everybody present had fun.
