One might say Netflix has an
original series for many different audiences, from 80s nostalgia hounds with “Stranger
Things” to recent-history buffs in “The Crown.” Premiering back in 2016, the
historical drama drew audiences with its look into the lives of the British
Royal Family with Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II as the focal
point starting from her marriage. The central role was ably played for two seasons
by Claire Foy, with a cast change as the timeline skips several years for
Season 3. This week Netflix reveals the premiere date for the continuing story
of “The Crown,” just as the new QE2 actress expresses the difficulty of picking
up from a prior performer.
E! Online tells us that Netflix’s royal drama “The Crown” will be
back with a new season this coming November. As stated, the new timeframe of
the show in the later 1960s necessitated a handover of roles as the characters
have aged much significantly than between Seasons 1 and 2. British actress Olivia
Colman, the new Elizabeth II in the cast following her countryman Claire Foy,
noted how excited she was to accept the part, only to realize that following it
up from a beloved portrayer was no mean feat.
"Everyone loves Claire Foy,
so I have got the worst job in the world at the moment,” remarked Colman in
interview about her “horrendous” experience as the Queen in “The Crown.” “You're
saying all the worst things, thanks!" she adds, referring to the audience
commenting on social media. Colman adds that on her first few scenes on the set
she felt that her character acting was more in line with “doing Claire Foy
impressions” instead. Season 3 sees Elizabeth and the British royalty in
between 1964 and 1977 with a passing of time spanning over a decade over
several episodes.
Those years as to be presented in
“The Crown” hold plenty of significant events in the House of Windsor as well
as the UK and the world. Milestones said to be included in season 3 are the exposure
of Elizabeth’s art adviser as a Soviet agent, the Harold Wilson Prime Ministry,
the Aberfan calamity, investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales, decolonization
of the former British Empire and the Apollo 11 moon landing of 1969.
Replacement cast members for
established characters alongside Olivia Colman include Tobias Menzies (Prince
Philip), Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret), Ben Daniels (Tony Armstrong-Jones),
Marion Bailey (the Queen Mother) and Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles. A significant
new cast addition is Emma Corrin as Lady Diana Spencer. “The Crown” Season 3
premieres on Netflix November 17.
