It is that time of the year again
for Disney to reveal their hand at what is in store for the media super-brand’s
future to a select audience in the annual D23 Expo. Set to take place in
Anaheim al through this weekend, the event is certain to have some major
reveals. It does not take much deductive reasoning to know that this 2019 D23
will see the unveiling of the Disney+ streaming service. Other goodies hinted
at include a new Marvel expansion area or theme park for Disneyland Resort. But
back to Disney+; apparently there is a new MCU-related series to be announced
too.
IGN tells us that another live-action series is in development for
streaming on the exclusive Disney+ platform, following after all the Marvel
Studios productions already announced before. Apparently it will be “Ms.
Marvel,” based on the latest iteration of the Marvel Comics character to carry
the costumed identity. That would be Pakistani-American Jersey City teenager
Kamala Khan, whose Inhuman genetics manifest allowing her to shape-shift her
body, as well as enlarge or shrink herself. She uses the previous codename of
the first Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers, shortly after she becomes the latest known
Captain Marvel.
Attached to be the show-runner
for this “Ms. Marvel” series is British writer Bisha K. Ali, one of the staff
writers for the Hulu miniseries remake of 1994 UK film “Four Weddings and a
Funeral.” As a Marvel Studios production for Disney+ it seems highly likely
that the show will be tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise, as
with the other series the studio is producing for the streaming service for its
launch. Furthermore, since this come across as an advance announcement, there is
probably no other production staff, castings or filming timetables set for “Ms.
Marvel” yet.
The Kamala Khan iteration of Ms.
Marvel was created by Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker in 2013, though her first
headlining comic title will not be until 2014, as written by Muslim American
author G. Willow Wilson. The character became a runaway hit with the depiction
of her life as a Muslim American citizen in a religious family, along with her
interactions with her school friends and community in Jersey City as well as
the superheroes based in nearby New York. The “Ms. Marvel” comic book would go
on to win a Hugo Award in 2015 for best graphic story.
Other Marvel Studios series on
Disney+ with confirmed MCU links include “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”
(2020), “WandaVision,” “Loki” and “Hawkeye” (all for 2021). The hero characters
on the show titles will be reprised by their respective MCU actors.
