MICHAEL “Yondu” ROOKER New “FAST AND FURIOUS 9” Cast Member

Fans of the high-speed vehicle action “Fast & Furious” film franchise from Universal might have divisions regarding its genre shift from underground racing and street crime to international terror incidents, but most will agree that the decision to end the 2017 installment “Fate of the Furious” on a cliffhanger was a bummer. Then again, it did introduce the series’ most diabolical antagonist yet in Cipher (Charlize Theron) who not only manipulated Dom (Vin Diesel) into a brief heel turn and has plans to literally destroy the world, but was also behind the plot of the big bad in this year’s spinoff entry “Hobbs and Shaw.”

This dangling sequel hook looks to get addressed in the next sequel “Fast & Furious 9,” set to be released next year courtesy of four-time returning director Justin Lin. Despite a brief lull in production due to an accident it looks fit to be ready in time for premiere. And as Entertainment Weekly tells it they had a new casting addition for the story, one that will certainly be a treat for fans of “Mary Poppins”…and Marvel. Incredibly, Michael Rooker has been revealed to be joining in on the action for “Fast & Furious 9.”

Most recently known for his role as Yondu in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, Rooker also made all his own a joke at his character’s expense from the second “Guardians” movie, with Yondu’s assertion of being Mary Poppins. This time he will portray a character named Buddy for “Fast & Furious 9, though no further details on his background in-story were revealed. This is merely the beginning for Rooker’s production appearances slated for 2020, as he is also cast in the upcoming “Fantasy Island” movie remake, “Monster Problems,” and the pilot episode for Netflix’s “Dark Tower.”

Production for “Fast & Furious 9” began in last June as was commemorated on Instagram by stars Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez. This makes the addition of Michael Rooker in the story a surprise development now that filming has long started already. Justin Lin is expected to handle directing “Fast 9” in the same style as he did for “Fast & Furious (4)” in 2009, 2011’s “Fast 5” and 2013’s “Fast 6.” And he is not done yet, with the announcement for a “Fast & Furious 10” set for 2021 confirming that he will remain the franchise director another time.

Also announced as part of the “Fast 9” cast with undisclosed roles are John Cena, Finn Cole, Vinnie Bennett and Anna Sawai. They will join Diesel, Rodriguez, Theron, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris Bridges, Tyrese Gibson and Helen Mirren. The movie will premiere on May 22, 2020.
