One factor that many fans liked
about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the fact that each film, and eventually
each connecting series, can be classified into different storytelling genres.
From the tech action of “Iron Man,” to the historical war drama of “Captain
America: The First Avenger,” to the supernatural setting of “Doctor Strange,”
there seems to be an MCU movie/show that will draw followers of specific
genres. One genre that the MCU is moving to enter now is horror, as teased by
the “Doctor Strange” sequel for Phase 4. Marvel Television plans to pull its
own weight in this effort, with its Hulu shows.
Comic Book Resources reports that Marvel Television, the dedicated
TV arm of Marvel Entertainment, is looking to tie together its two in-development
series for Hulu, “Ghost Rider” and “Helstrom,” into a horror-theme subset of
the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb reveals that the two
shows, plus others being planned for Hulu, will be collectively branded as “Adventure
into Fear,” with horror and the supernatural being their defining themes. “Ghost
Rider” is notable for getting as led Gabriel Luna, who portrayed the
flaming-skull spirit of vengeance on ABC’s MCU tie-in “Agents of SHIELD.”
Loeb recalls several
conversations with the Marvel Television team about the stable of Marvel Comics
characters appearing in the “Ghost Rider” comic line, some of which would carry
titles of their own while the others appear in some or all in a shared setting.
Pointing out common shared characters between Ghost Rider and Daimon Helstrom
the “Son of Satan,” Loeb notes, "We suddenly saw that there were three or
four shows that we could put together that we now refer to as Adventure into
Fear." He also sees the need to emphasize the label’s “Fear” not as “Horror”
but “Terror.”
"No, it’s terror, because
when you say horror, it means so many different things,” says Jeph Loeb while
making references to the “Saw” franchise as an example of horror. The “Adventure
into Fear” shows on Hulu on the other hand will do things differently explains
Loeb. “What we love is the notion of how we can present a Marvel hero who was
truly feared and truly believed that they were a monster, but that, as the stories
go on, they realize, oh, I’m the hero of the story, I’m not the villain of the
story.”
The Hulu Marvel lineup began with
“Runaways” in 2017. “Ghost Rider” and “Helstrom” will join in the near future along
with several adult-oriented animated shows separate from the MCU. Marvel
Television will also develop new shows to debut on the Disney+ streaming
platform, also separate from the Marvel Studios-produced MCU tie-ins like the “Loki”
series.
