The Netflix anime train is on
full steam, as their platform carries not only hit anime series from Japanese
networks but all-original productions from the country’s anime studios made
just for streaming. The results are a potpourri of genres from action to drama
to horror to comedy, featuring either lush traditional 2D animation or crisp
3D. There is one adaptation that Netflix is working on, a live-action version
of the legendary anime series “Cowboy Bebop.” The primary cast of this in-production
series, centered on John Cho, was announced way back in April. Now, a
significant cast addition has been revealed.
Comic Book Resources tells us that the Netflix “Cowboy Bebop”
live-action series has cast actress Elena Satine as Julia, the woman from the dark
past of principal character Spike Spiegel (John Cho). The casting announcement
describes Satine’s character in the show as a “sultry beauty with a voice to
die for,” and that she is the girl of Spike’s troubled dreams, trying to
survive in a future solar system that has become a violent sci-fi take on the
Wild West.
Satine is no stranger to being
part of some high-concept series. After all, she has been cast in no less than
three superhero TV series, from 2010’s “Smallville” (as Mera), 2014’s “Agents
of SHIELD” (as Lorelei), and most recently in 2017’s “The Gifted” as Sonya
Simonson/Dreamer. Her other major TV works include the “Twin Peaks” remake and “24:
Legacy,” both in 2017. She joins John Cho’s Spike, Mustafa Shakir’s Jet Black,
Daniella Padilla’s Faye Valentine and Alex Hassell’s Vicious in the cast. “Cowboy
Bebop” is being produced for Netflix by “Prison Break” and “Teen Wolf” producer
Marty Adelstein, who is partnering with Japanese studio Sunrise (creator of the
original anime) under the Tomorrow Studios label.
The 1998 anime, most prominently
shown in the West as part of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim late-night block, was
credited for being part of the driving force that triggered a renewed
international interest in Japanese animation. The Netflix series synopsis
describes the crew of bounty hunters led by Spike Spiegel as they pursue space
criminals across the solar system while trying to evade the shadows of their
respective pasts. But if given the right price, they might just get serious and
actually save the world.
Christopher Yost serves as executive
producer of the live-action show, with original anime director Shinichiro
Watanabe serving as series consultant. Netflix has yet to give a premiere date
for “Cowboy Bebop,” but it is known that the pilot is being directed by Alex Garcia
Lopez, director of two “Daredevil” season 3 episodes from Marvel Netflix.
