Though the representative to the “Big
Four” international beauty pageant Miss World was once decided by winners in
the Binibining Pilipinas competition, the franchise has struck out on its own
since 2011 with “Miss World Philippines,” of which eight editions have already
been held. As the new system gradually found its footing in sending Philippine
representatives to Miss World, its total number of contestants swelled from an
initial 25 to a maximum of 40 as of the 2018 pageant. The same figure is
applied to this year’s Miss World Philippines, with the latest pool of
contestants being notable for coming from such varied personal backgrounds.
According to The Philippine Star, among the 40 candidates for the 2019 Miss
World Philippines pageant, there are some top board-passers, returnees from
previous MWP contests, pageant veterans from Binibining Pilipinas, and a wide
variety of celebrities from girl group member to a former child actress. The
most notable entry would have to be GMA Artist Center talent Isabelle de Leon,
who was at the latest part of the Kapuso fantasy drama “Dragon Lady” which
concluded July. But she would probably be remembered best as her child
character Duday from the Vic Sotto-starring GMA sitcom “Daddy Di Do Du”
(2001-07); she’s all grown up indeed.
Joining Isabelle on this pageant
tilt, also from GMA Artist Center, is former GirlTrends (from ABS-CBN’s “It’s Showtime”)
member Kelley Day, one-time girlfriend of Iñigo Pascual. There is also
Michelle Dee of proud beauty queen lineage and pedigree. Her mother is Miss
International 1979 Melanie Marquez after all, and her cousin Winwyn Marquez was
Reina Hispanoamericana 2017. Then there are the various top-notch board passer
candidates such as Sharielle Yanson (2017 Nursing Board Exam) and Cebu Doctor’s
University grad Louise Tan Theunis (2018 Pharmaceutical Board Exam). For
coolness points, Theunis also happens to be half-Belgian.
Half-foreign Filipinas have become
recent favorites to represent the country in international beauty pageants, so
Albie Casiño’s
Filipino-American girlfriend Michelle Arceo is banking on both that and the
fact that she is a pageant veteran herself, with her Miss BodyCon 2019 title.
Other contestants who have prior pageant experience in their record are Bb.
Pilipinas contestants Ilene De Vera, Ruffa Nava, Sammie Anne Legaspi and
Kayesha Chua, who was a contemporary of current Miss Universe Catriona Gray
herself. Coming back from previous MWP attempts are Michelle Thorlund and
Glyssa Perez.
Aside for the Miss World
representation, Miss World Philippines will also field candidates for Reina
Hispanoamericana, Miss Eco International and Miss Multinational from its winners.
The 2019 pageant will have its coronation night on September 15 at Smart
Araneta Coliseum.
