SPOILER-Filled "POKEMON: MEWTWO STRIKES BACK EVOLUTION" Trailer Released Ahead of JULY 12 Premiere in JAPAN

In 1998, the anime adaptation of Nintendo’s portable gaming success “Pokémon” proved that it had the storytelling muscle to jump from TV to the big screen, when their first movie “Mewtwo Strikes Back” arrived in theaters. That was such a momentous event that it was guaranteed a US release despite being a franchise anime film. Over two decades later that development ensured “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu,” the first Western-produced and live-action film of the property. The 20-year milestone also served as an inspiration for a remake of “The First Movie,” in 3D animation to boot. Following a teaser last January, a new trailer has been unveiled.

Comic Book Resources reports that a new trailer has arrived for “Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION,” the CGI remake of the first “Pokémon” movie out of the late 20th Century. As the events of the movie are well remembered by the franchise’s early fandom, the first teaser from months ago did not shy at showing scenes from the film proper. This new trailer only ratchets the spoilers up to eleven with a lot of reimagined shots from the 1998 original. And unlike Disney’s remake of “The Lion King,” the action sequences were actually re-envisioned rather than mirrored shot by shot.

With the curious choice of Rita Ora’s “Let You Love Me” as background music, the trailer for “Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION” starts with shots of the Mew, Pokémon #151, travelling through a montage of locations out in nature. It then segues into the creation of Mew’s clone Mewtwo (#150), and his master plan of destroying humanity from the foreboding city of Old Stone Wharf, where Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum (Satoshi in Japanese) along with his companions are headed after receiving an invitation to challenge a master trainer and his Pokémon.

As already stated the trailer spells out what the main characters are in for and will not surprise fans that have seen “The First Movie” aside from the 3D animation treatment. Smooth camera angles, dynamic fight scenes, and one dramatic event play out that will remind old followers of the storied past and introduce newcomers to a truly remarkable franchise.

“Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION” is directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and Motonori Sakakibara from the original 1998 screenplay by the late Takeshi Shudo. The original Japanese voice cast will reprise their roles, including Masachika Ichimura as Mewtwo. While it will premiere in cinemas across Japan this July 12, this film has already been assured of an official English dub that will release sometime next year.
