Around two months ago, the
British Royal Family got bigger by one, on account of the birth of the first
child between Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Baby
Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is hailed as the first half-American and
biracial British Royal, though he will not be styled as a Prince until he “moves
up” once his grandfather ascends the throne. Since his birth his mother Duchess
Meghan has not been going out much. She finally made an exception when she went
to Wimbledon Thursday as a show of support for her close friend, currently
competing in the Grand Slam tournament.
USA Today has it that Meghan Duchess of Sussex made a solo
appearance at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships July 4. She arrived, dressed in
jeans, black shirt, white blazer and a chain necklace with an “A” pendant for
her son, just in time to catch the Day 4 match of her friend, world tennis
darling Serena Williams, against Slovenian Kaja Juvan on Court 1. The two
became fast friends years ago at a charity event, leading to Serena and Reddit co-founder
husband Alexis Ohanian attending the former actress’ Royal Wedding to Prince
Harry, May 2018.
This is an especially important
tournament for Williams who has returned, after having a baby in 2017, to
pursuing her Grand Slam title race to match Margaret Court’s all-time record of
24. After a brief shock when Juvan jumped her on the first set, she recovered
her poise and flattened the Slovenian on the next two. This is in form with the
tennis icon’s professed game style of closing matches. The fact that her old
friend and now Royal was watching must have been a factor as well. Such had
been their closeness that Williams planned a baby shower event for the Duchess
in New York City back in February.
While her Wimbledon trip was done
on her own, Meghan has actually made an earlier public appearance over the
weekend, accompanied by her husband Prince Harry. The two watched an MLB match
held in London between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, and later
visited both teams in their locker rooms. Both Red Sox and Yankees presented
the Royal Couple with gifts for Baby Archie, with the New Yorkers presenting an
honorary Yankees baby jersey for their child.
As for Serena, she is due for a
mixed-doubles match Friday, July 5, where she will team up with Andy Murray who
makes his return to Wimbledon following a missed year due to hip surgery. On
the Royal side, Meghan’s sister-in-law Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, made her own
visit to Wimbledon days earlier from hers, just to watch the games.
