Fans of classic science fiction
TV that has been brought forward to the present and future are sure to be
pleased with the current state of the iconic “Star Trek” franchise. It seems
there is a bit of something depending on when a fan became a “Trekkie.” New
entries will have the likes of “Star Trek: Discovery” while fans of the lead
captain from the 80s-90s “The Next Generation” will totally eat up “Star Trek:
Picard,” both shows being on CBS All Access. For big-screen audiences
disappointed with the cancellation of a “Star Trek 4” from J.J. Abrams, a
project being conceptualized by Quentin Tarantino might be just the ticket.
Cinema Blend reports that a potential new “Star Trek” movie is
being worked on by Quentin Tarantino, who is currently in the spotlight for the
upcoming “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” from Sony and Columbia Pictures. The
high-profile filmmaker made mention of the project on the MTV podcast “Happy
Sad Confused,” where he also hinted at the possible timeline where it might
take place. Tarantino remarked that the script he developed with Mark L. Smith
(“The Revenant”) might be set in what he identifies as the “Chris Pine”
timeline.
As a refresher, the original
1960s “Star Trek” show (called “The Original Series” or TOS) is the focal point
of the classic timeline which encompasses “The Next Generation,” “Deep Space
Nine,” “Voyager” and all cinematic-release films, with William Shatner
portraying Captain James T. Kirk of the USS
Enterprise. The Chris Pine timeline stems from the 2009 “Star Trek” movie
reboot which was altered by time-travelling shenanigans from the classic timeline’s
future, and where Kirk is played by Chris Pine. Said timeline currently only
has three films comprising it, with Pine’s role departure ending a fourth
installment before going to production.
Quentin Tarantino then clarified
that, although he is a fan of the longer, more established classic timeline
featuring Shatner-Kirk, he was also impressed by the characterization of the
character by Pine, alongside Zachary Quinto’s Spock. Tarantino’s investment in
conceptualizing this possible “Star Trek” movie, increases the possibility of the
production being a replacement for the aborted Pine-Kirk “ST4.” One question
however is if he will actually direct the final script or not, seeing as he
made a lifetime promise to retire after directing 10 movies, of which “Once
Upon a Time in Hollywood” is number 9. About the only plot detail Tarantino can
share is that it is like “Pulp Fiction” set in “Star Trek.”
While that project is still miles
away, “Star Trek: Picard” on CBS All Access, with Patrick Stewart returning
from “The Next Generation,” is set to premiere on 2020. Tarantino’s “Once Upon
a Time in Hollywood” premieres on Friday, July 26.
