Music industries of countries around
the world have their own awards, the Philippines has its own. One in particular
is the Awit Awards, begun in 1969 as a labor of love by the country’s
then-correspondent to Billboard. It originally lasted only until 1971, but
would be revived in 1988 by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry
(PARI), which continues to annually hold the awards until now. As of last week
PARI has begun releasing the list of nominees for the 2019 Awit Awards, and a
scan of the names of singers and groups in the announcement indicates a strong
presence of Star Music talents.
ABS-CBN News reports that the nominees for the 2019 Awit Awards was
publicized around last Friday, July 19, by the Philippine Association of the
Record Industry. The list contains many notable performers under the label of Star
Music, formerly Star Records the music producing arm of ABS-CBN. Leading the
Star Music talents in racking up nominations for the Awit Awards is Moira dela
Torre, who churned out present-day OPM hits like “Tadhana” and “Tagpuan.” She
also currently sits as judge on “Idol Philippines,” the third adaptation of the
international “Idol” franchise and soon to conclude its inaugural season on
ABS-CBN.
Dela Torre has no less than eight
nominations across different categories in this year’s Awits, and she is not
alone in representing Star Music. Following her is BRWN with seven nominations.
Third place with six is Janine Tenoso, while sharing fourth place are This Band
and Juan Karlos, both with five nominations to their names. Moira stands a
chance to receive an Awit Award for each of these following categories: Record,
Song, and Music Video of the Year and Best Ballad Recording, all for “Tagpuan;”
Best Pop Recording for “Tagu-Taguan;” Best Collaboration for “Langit Lupa” with
Iñigo
Pascual; and Album of the Year for “Malaya.”
The 2019 Awit Awards has 30
categories for nomination, classified into five areas of music and recording: Performance,
Creativity, Technical Achievement, Album Packaging and Music Video. Star Music
talents also seem to account for no less than a third of all the nominees
listed for the awards. As of the moment the Philippine Association of the
Record Industry has not yet given a date for the Awit Awards ceremony, but it
will likely be happening within the next few months.
