“IDOL PHILIPPINES” Top 6 Finalized with SHELAND and FATIMA ELIMINATION

It is amazing how time just can suddenly fly as the destination of a journey comes ever closer. The third weekend of the Live Shows for “Idol Philippines” on ABS-CBN has come and gone last Saturday and Sunday, and the number of surviving idol hopefuls grows ever smaller. From the 20 that came into the Do or Die rounds four weekends ago, only a Top Eight remained when the reality singing competition came on again this July 13 the hopefuls sang the cream of the crop among the most-streamed songs in the Philippines. When the third live show ended Sunday, Fatima and Sheland bowed out.

As ABS-CBN News tells us, the Top 8 hopefuls of “Idol Philippines” have now become the Final 6, as Sheland Faelnar and Fatima Louise Lagueras become the last two to be eliminated from the Live Shows phase. The two of them, along with Elle Ocampo and Lance Busa, landed at the bottom half of the Top 8 performances for the Third Weekend. Eventually however, both Busa and Ocampo were judged to be safe, leaving Lagueras and Faelnar to their fates.

The song theme of the third Live Shows was of the “Philippines’ Most Streamed Hits,” as in songs that have been streamed online multiple times by Filipinos, both OPM and international. To that end the Top 8 would be mentored by one of the country’s own big names in music streaming, Morissette Amon. On Saturday Sheland, a veteran of variety-show singing competitions on two networks (“Tawag ng Tanghalan” on “It’s Showtime” and “Music Hero” on “Eat Bulaga!”) sang indie group This Band’s “Hindi na Nga,” which earned divided reactions from judges Regine Velasquez, Vice Ganda, James Reid and Moira Dela Torre. The same went for Fatima who chose another OPM indie, “Kathang Isip” from Ben&Ben.

While Lance and Elle were able to survive elimination and thus remain with the hopefuls to the final act, their scores were only single-digits removed from that of Fatima and Sheland, all of whom garnering less than 60%. On the other end of the spectrum, the two highest scoring of the Top 8 had been Zephanie Dimaranan, who aced Sarah G’s “Isa Pang Araw,” and Lucas Garcia, whose rendition of “Tagpuan” impressed its singer, judge Moira who commended Garcia for making the song his own.

The remaining Idol hopefuls, now the Final 6, will face two more weekends of Live Shows for “Idol Philippines” with the winner to be known this July 28. In the second Live Show last July 6-7, Renwick Benito and Trish Bonilla were eliminated in a sing-off of hits from Erik Santos and Yeng Constantino, who were also the mentors. “Idol Philippines” returns with the penultimate Live Show this coming weekend July 20-21, only on ABS-CBN.
