In 2011, an indie comedy film
wowed audiences and judges at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival of that
year. This was “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank” by writer-producer Chris Martinez and
director Marlon Rivera. It starred Eugene Domingo as herself, being cast as
lead by a trio of indie filmmakers hell-bent on making a little production that
can win big awards. The Cinemalaya success of “Septic Tank” led to a wider
release by Star Cinema, plus becoming the Philippine entry for Best
Foreign-Language Film at the 2011 Oscars. Years after the splash it made, and a
2016 sequel from Quantum Films, a follow-up comes in the form of a series.
ABS-CBN News tells us that iWant will be hosting “Ang Babae sa
Septic Tank 3,” a miniseries sequel to the two “Septic Tank” films of 2011 and
2016. The production posse of the originals return along with their lead star
(both in and out of universe) Eugene Domingo, who will get a third kick out of portraying
a diva actress version of her real-life self while also playing the main
character of the fictitious movie in the story. This time, the genre shifts
from art-house indie and rom-com to historical.
That is because this time around
the “movie within the series” that Domingo’s fictionalized counterpart will be
starring in is called “The Real Untold Story of Josephine Bracken,” which is
also the subtitle for the “Septic Tank 3” series. To paraphrase the hysterical
trailer above, Domingo is playing Domingo portraying Josephine Bracken. And in
a shout-out to “Septic Tank 2” there will also be a leading man in the
spotlight. Tony Labrusca will be playing Tony Labrusca who has been cast in the
film as “Hunk Jose Rizal,” as if we need any other hint that this show will be
all laughs and pointy satires of the Philippine movie industry.
“A sequel that is also a series?
Do you even want that? It’s just a suggestion. But you’ve heard it right!” goes
the hilarious voiceover for this initial trailer of “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank
3: The Real Untold Story of Josephine Bracken.” Subscribers of ABS-CBN’s iWant streaming
are guaranteed laugh out loud at the surreal yet somewhat real absurdity hat
will go on in the series about making a movie with Eugene Domingo. They can
find out just how exactly that will go when “Septic Tank 3” the series begins
streaming this July 17.
