Though not as large and prominent
as equivalent fandoms in other American leagues like the NBA, there is in fact
a visible following in the Philippines for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE),
arguably the world’s largest pro wrestling promotion and an overall
entertainment media company. Many Filipinos could name a favorite superstar in
the WWE stable, and the few times the promotion held shows in the country with
local partnerships, the crowds were large and enthusiastic. After around three
years when the WWE last performed locally, the brand is returning to Manila
again, with a formidable roster of its current talent.
The Manila Bulletin tells us that World Wrestling Entertainment is
linking up with major Philippine concerts and live-events promotional outfit
Wilbros Live, to present “WWE Live in Manila” at the Big Dome, Smart Araneta
Coliseum. Wilbros executive producer Winston Llamas notes that his promotion is
thrilled to be able to bring back the WWE to perform at Manila once more. He
also describes the spectacle, scheduled only for one night, as a must-see event
for the whole family and groups of friends of all ages.
Speaking on behalf of the WWE,
the promotion’s Asia Pacific vice president and general manager Chris Marsh
says, "We are excited to return to Manila, where the passionate WWE
Universe can see their favorite WWE Superstars live. Our fans can look forward
to experiencing another action-packed night of family-friendly entertainment
that will create life-long memories.” It is being considered a Filipino
homecoming for World Wresting Entertainment following their last Manila-held
show in September of 2016.
WWE’s return engagement in the
Philippines will feature some of the most prominent pro wrestlers – called Superstars
– that are active in the promotion today. Their Asia Pacific office and Wilbros
Live has teased a list of talent expected to wrestle under the Big Dome,
although the line-up has not been finalized and can be changed. They include
Kofi Kingston, Roman Reigns, Finn Bálor, Xavier Woods, Shinsuke Nakamura, Elias,
Keith Owens and Rusev. Female superstars are headlined by the formidable Asuka
and Charlotte Flair, plus Carmella, Bayley, and the Ilconics. More appearing talents
still remain unannounced.
“WWE Live in Manila” for 2019 is
scheduled to run at the Smart Araneta Coliseum only on September 20. Interested
members among the Philippine corner of the WWE Universe can avail of their
tickets for the one-night event starting this coming Sunday, June 22, at
TicketNet.com.ph, the TicketNet hotline and TicketNet outlets across the country.
