On Sunday night, a gathering of the
most beautiful and intelligent Filipinas today came together at the Smart
Araneta Coliseum for the 56 Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant. Up to 40
candidates graced the stage, stunning the audience with their wardrobes –
national costume, swimsuit and evening gown – and their wit in answering questions
in the case of the Top 15. The 2019 edition of the Bb. Pilipinas pageant also marked
a closer level of cooperation between BP Charities Inc. and the Miss Universe organization
which had established a Philippine office. In the end a feisty Cebuana won the
title, crowned by the reigning Miss Universe herself.
As CNN Philippines tells us, Gazini Christiana Ganados of Talisay City
in Cebu prevailed over her sister contestants this June 9, when she was
accorded the highest honor in this year’s Binibing Pilipinas beauty pageant.
That honor, as always, has been to be the official Philippine representative to
the next Miss Universe competition. Ganados secured her spot as Bb. Pilipinas –
Universe 2019 in part perhaps to her reply in the Question and Answer portion
for the Top 15 contestants that made it past the 25 chosen from the starting 40.
For the Q&A, Ganados was
asked by judge Bobby Barreiro how she might encourage more women in the
workplace if she were to win the crown. Given 30 seconds for her reply, the
Talisay, Cebu bet answered: "If I win the crown tonight, what I will do is
to promote my advocacy. My advocacy is for us women to fight for our rights and
for the elderly care and for us to be able to know that someone is loving and
someone is pushing us to whatever ambitions that we have. We will be able to
rise from our decisions to whatever dreams that we have, goals that we have,
and we will achieve it because of those values, those wisdoms that they gave
us."
While it was enough to secure the
crown and Miss Universe representation for Gazini Ganados (even being crowned
by Catriona Gray herself), not all who watched in the audience or TV were
uniformly impressed by her Q&A performance. Posts on social media noted
that the Cebuana beauty will need to practice more, particularly as the Miss
Universe pageant has one of the most nerve-wracking Q&A’s in any beauty
pageant nowadays. Others however are hopeful that Ganados can shape up in time
for Miss U 2019.
Following from Ganados, Bataan’s
Bea Patricia Magtanong is Bb. Pilipinas – International 2019, the two of them
representing the last remaining big beauty pageants that draw representatives
from Binibining Pilipinas (as Miss World and Miss Earth have their own
competitions). Minor pageant representatives include Resham Ramirez Saeed of
Maguindanao (Bb. Pilipinas – Supranational 2019), Cebu City’s Samantha Ashley
Lo (Bb. Pilipinas – Grand International 2019), Emma Mary Tiglao from Pampanga (Bb.
Pilipinas – Intercontinental 2019), and Leren Mae Bautista of Laguna (Bb. Pilipinas
– Globe 2019). Title-holders from the previous year, like with Catriona Gray,
were on hand to crown their respective predecessors Sunday night. The pageant
was hosted by Anne Curtis and Richard Gutierrez.
