Every now and then, Disney goes
and turns some of their Animated Canon films into TV series. The probability of
small-screen success for such a move usually depends on two things: having the
film’s original cast reprising their characters for a number of episodes and
possibly multiple seasons, plus having an effective writing team to create the
ongoing storyline these characters must live through. Disney’s recent hits in
this vein include “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure” and “Big Hero 6: The Series.”
Now, they are looking to replicate that success with yet another movie
conversion, this time of a Pixar creation too.
Entertainment Weekly has it that Disney is spinning off Pixar’s
2001 film “Monsters, Inc.” into a new animated series. However, rather than
have it join the aforementioned shows on Disney Channel or XD, this one will be
an exclusive on the company’s streaming platform Disney+. In addition, while
the main characters from the original film will be present and voiced by their
original cast, the viewpoint personage for this spinoff is a new character, a
rookie employee of the titular Monsters Inc. looking to make a name for himself
and rise in the corporate organization.
This spinoff will be called “Monsters
at Work” and will star Ben Feldman as Monsers Inc. mechanic Tylor Tuskmon,
attached to the company facilities department. But he is also a big fan of ace
employees “Sulley” Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, the heroes of the 2001 voiced
respectively by John Goodman and Billy Crystal, and hopes to eventually be
reassigned to the Laugh Floor and be able to work together with them. Feldman is
definitely excited about his new role, judging from him posting a key image of
his character Tylor on his official Instagram page.
“This show is crazy fun & I’m
so hyped to have finagled my way into the [Disney] fam,” Feldman said on the
post’s caption. He also assured old-school fans of “Monsters, Inc.” that Mike
and Sulley are indeed present in the show. “Monsters at Work” was developed for
Disney+ by Bobs Gannaway, who will also serve as executive producer of the
series. It has also been confirmed that some of Goodman and Crystal’s film
costars are also doing their own role reprisals, from Jennifer Tilly to Bob
Peterson and John Ratzenberger. New cast members alongside with Feldman include
Kelly Marie Tran, Aisha Tyler, Lucas Neff, Stephen Stanton and Henry Winkler.
Disney+, the exclusive streaming
service of the House of Mouse, is expected to launch in late 2019, while “Monsters
at Work” will be put up for streaming sometime in 2020.
