MTV already had its turn to give
out accolades with the recent Movie & TV Awards which aired this week
(after taping on Saturday). Now, Fox network makes ready to make teenagers of
America vote on their counterpart presentation, the Teen Choice Awards for
2019. The 21st iteration of the awards will be held this August at
Hermosa Beach in California, featuring nominations of achievements in film,
television, music, sports and other fields. Fox started announcing their
nominees for various categories on Wednesday, and from the look of things, it
may be another big break for K-Pop in the US.
As the Manila Bulletin has it, South Korean pop music is heavily represented
for the 2019 Teen Choice Awards. In the revelation of the nominees for Choice
International Artist, four of the six announced were stalwart acts in the K-Pop
scene. They were boy bands EXO, BTS and NCT 127 plus hot girl group BLACKPINK,
which might be remembered in the Philippines recently for a badly managed promo
by Singaporean e-commerce platform Shopee, to win tickets for a meet-and-greet
event. They were accompanied on that category by other musical groups: Little
Mix from the UK and Latino boy band CNCO.
A fifth K-pop act makes its appearance
in the Choice Electronic/Dance Song, namely Red Velvet for “Close to Me (Red
Velvet Remix),” in collaboration with Ellie Goulding and Diplo. Other
nominations for K-pop acts in the Teen Choice Awards include the following: “DDU-DU
DDU-DU” by BLACKPINK for Best Song, where one of its rivals is “Sucker” by the
Jonas Brothers. The music video for the latter includes appearances from the spouses
of the Jonases: Kevin’s wife Daniela Deleasa, Nick’s wife Priyanka Chopra, and
Joe’s wife Sophie Turner. BLAKPINK’s “DDU-DU DDU-DU” video on the other hand has
852 million YouTube views.
For Best Collaboration, BTS shares
a nomination with Halsey for “Boy with Luv.” They are up against a heavy
competitor in the form of 2018 Academy Award Winner for Best Song “Shallow” by
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, from the film “A Star is Born.”
Voting on the 2019 Teen Choice
Awards is for Americans of age 13 and above, done on the award ceremony’s official
website and Twitter page. The voting period will be divided into three phases: June
19-25, July 8-15, and July 8 to Aug. 11, the day of the Awards itself. Voters
will be able to vote as many times on any category as needed, with the
limitations being only 10 votes per calendar day and per Twitter ID. Each tweet
must have only one category and nominee vote on it. More nominees will be
revealed as the voting periods advance.
