Fans may say what they want
regarding the quality of the final season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” that
premiered last April, but they can at least appreciate the effort put through
the medieval fantasy epic series by its now-very famous cast. One of these is
Kit Harington, who portrayed eventual lead character Jon Snow. Harington has recently
checked himself into a Connecticut wellness center to recover from the immense
stress he underwent in playing the role to its conclusion. In his name a number
of “Thrones” fans started a fundraiser for the British actor’s favored charity,
which Harington thanked for with his own donation.
As Entertainment Weekly tells us, Kit Harington showed his support for
a fundraising effort by fans of “Game of Thrones,” by donating enough money for
them to reach their monetary target. The fundraiser was launched on the
JustGiving.com platform, for a target of £50,000 or roughly $63,000 with
the recipient being The Royal Mecap Society, a UK charity working with people
that have learning disabilities. Just as the fundraiser has reached about 87%
of their goal, Harington sent them a heartfelt message of gratitude, plus £7,728.75
($9,810.48) to cover the rest of the target amount.
A description of the
JustGiving.com fundraiser had the organizers thanking Harington for his
inspired performance of Jon Snow, and that their initiative was their way of
thanking the actor for the work he put in the role, even to the point of
needing a period of rehabilitation. For their beneficiary charity, the
fundraiser mentioned that Mencap supports people with learning disabilities to
live independent and fulfilling lives. The one-time King in the North himself
had high praise for Mencap in his note, explaining how his having a 14-year-old
cousin with learning difficulties spurred him to support the charity years ago.
For the fans behind the
fundraising drive, Kit Harington said, “This donations page lifted my heart and
brought tears to my eyes, what a beautiful gift to receive…how generous of all
of you.” And in keeping with the character that his fans loved watching him
portray, the actor signed off thus: “With love and respect from beyond the wall…Kit
x.”
Kit Harington was cast in “Game
of Thrones” ahead of its 2011 premiere on HBO, and has been a constant
character in the show for eight seasons. As initial lead characters were killed
off in the course of the storyline, Harington’s Jon Snow came to the forefront
of both the political and supernatural conflicts in the continent of Westeros,
rising from (alleged) bastard son to King and reluctant world savior.
