One week ago, ABS-CBN’s
localization of Fremantle Media’s “Idol” reality singing franchise finally
completed the most vital segment of their competition, the selection of the Top
12. From this point, the remaining contestants of “Idol Philippines” are no
longer at the sole mercy of the panel of judges, but will also be able to count
on public voter support. This came into play for the first time this June 29 to
30, when the Top 12 performed for the first time in Live Shows, with the theme
being the music of legendary composer Ryan Cayabyab. In the end, the first two
were eliminated from contention: Matty Juniosa and Rachel Libres.
ABS-CBN News tells us that Rachel Libres and Matty Juniosa were the
first two of the Top 12 for ABS-CBN’s “Idol Philippines” to be eliminated from
competition this Sunday, June 30. The contestants were to sing songs composed
by Ryan Cayabyab, a pillar of OPM over several decades, and give their own Idol
interpretation to them. Following their performances of the Live Show, three of
the Top 12 was ranked by the judges in the bottom three: Juniosa and Libres
along with Elle Ocampo. From here, the audience votes would thus decide their
ultimate fate.
The songs of Maestro Ryan that
were performed by the bottom 3 this past weekend were: “Nais Ko” by Basil
Valdez for Juniosa, “Paano Na Kaya” by Bugoy Drilon for Libres, and another
Basil number – “Paraisong Parisuka” – for Ocampo. When the results came in this
Sunday evening, all three onlu managed judge-voter scores in the line of 50%,
but Ocampo managed to squeeze by with a 51.81% rating. Rachel would come up to 50.52%
while Matty ended with just 50.5%. While disappointed at their final standing,
the two eliminated hopefuls have steeled themselves for the possibility of
being the least-voted.

One of the judges, Moira de la
Torre, noted that Rachel Libres was genuinely talented, urging her to be strong
despite her setback and to keep practicing to get better. Of this Rachel said
in post-interview, “I never felt it was a competition because I felt we were
all a big family.” As for Matty Juniosa, he was well aware of the uphill slop
for him, saying in his post-interview that his singing style was an “acquired
taste.” He remarks, "But I'm so happy kasi I got to march yesterday with
my eye shadow, and with my performance and I've been able to sing my heart out.
I waited for one year for this moment.”
The remaining Idol hopefuls, the
now-Top 10, include Zephanie Dimaranan (99.75%), Dan Ombao (83.73%), Lucas
Garcia (71.85%), Fatima Louise (66.2%), Miguel Odron (63.73%), Sheland Faelnar
(60.67%), Lance Busa (56.61%), Trish Bonilla (55.38%), Renwick Benito (53.41%),
