Ever since it premiered on global streaming service Netflix back in 2016, historical drama series “The Crown” has been one of their best-viewed and award-winning shows. The show chronicles the life of Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom, from her marriage to Prince Philip as Crown Princess in the reign of her father George VI, to her own rule, and all the crises she has faced in her nation, the world, and her own Royal Family. Two seasons have been released with a third on the way. But Netflix is already casting for season 4, particularly for a role arguably greater than the Queen.
CNN reports that Netflix and Sony Pictures Television has finally decided on an actress for the character that would overshadow Elizabeth II in the still-in-development fourth season of “The Crown.” That character is none other than Lady Diana Spencer, better known as Princess Diana after marrying Charles, Prince of Wales, and later “The People’s Princess.” For the part they will cast Emma Corrin, who has said that she was excited at being part of the much talked-about historical drama. Corrin has parts in UK drama “Grandchester,” “Pennyworth” premiering soon on Epix, and upcoming British comedy-drama “Misbehaviour” with Keira Knightley, about the 1970 Miss World pageant.
It is a well-known historical topic about the British Royal Family that there was a strained relationship between Princess Diana and her mother-in-law the Queen. Things came to a head following her divorce from Charles, which her reputation besmirched, only to be turned around and hailed as a saintly benefactor for various world charities following her violent death in 1997.
But that narrative will have to wait until “The Crown” season 4, which will start filming this year. But already set to arrive on Netflix this 2019 is the finished season 3, which will debut for the first time the new actors and actresses that are taking over for Elizabeth II and other characters following a time-skip of several years.
Olivia Colman will take over for Claire Foy as Elizabeth II. Other replacements are Tobias Menzies (for Matt Smith) as Prince Philip, Helena Bonham Carter (for Vanessa Kirby) as Princess Margaret, marion Bailey (for Victoria Hamilton) as Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and Josh O’Connor (for Julian Baring) as Prince Charles. They will be joined by Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson, Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon and Erin Doherty as Princess Anne. “The Crown” arrives for streaming on Netflix some time later this year.
