When Warner Bros. Television brought their “superhero” crime drama “Gotham” on Fox network in 2014, they had the unenviable task of selling a show with elements of the Batman story mythos, but no Batman himself. Somehow the managed to make the struggles of GCPD detective James Gordon and orphaned company heir Bruce Wayne last five seasons, chronicling the decay of Gotham City from a mob town to a costumed villain haunt, even as Bruce is shaped into its eventual Dark Knight protector. Season 5 is expected to end with the whole series on April 25, and WBTV has one last super-villain reveal to make known.
IGN decided not to make an April Fools’ Day joke out of what Gotham’s greatest super-villain the Joker would look like in the season 5 and series finale of “Gotham” later this month, by showing how he would look then. The 12thand last episode of the concluding season for “Gotham” has gotten a promotional blitz on social media, with a YouTube video (only available in certain territories) and several Twitter posts, with a shot of the TV series’ take on Joker. As expected, he is played by Cameron Monaghan, a prominent antagonist cast member.
Monaghan appeared right in the inaugural season as Jerome Valeska, a one-off criminal investigated by Gordon (Ben McKenzie) for murdering his mother. His sudden laughing fit as he is exposed for his crime immediately gets him pegged by “Gotham” viewers as a potential candidate for becoming a Joker. Indeed, his character development over the following seasons sees him becoming a maniacal criminal bent on driving the city to ruin, who is not even stopped by dying once. His second death has him swearing to become a chaotic force tied to Gotham forever, even as he seemingly ensures his “existence” by turning his heretofore-unrevealed brother Jeremiah (also Monaghan) into a replacement.

“Gotham” show-runner John Stephens has earlier intimated that the series finale “The Beginning” is mostly set in the future from the present-day setting of the disaster-ridden city on the verge of destruction. Cameron Monaghan’s Joker, shown garbed in the character’s familiar purple, will ostensibly be present in both timeframes of that finale, which would likely see Jim Gordon’s journey to become Gotham’s police commissioner, and Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) refining his existing masked vigilante gimmick into the legendary Batman persona.
The show also stars Donal Logue, Camren Bicondova, Erin Richards, Robin Lord Taylor, Cory Michael Smith, Morena Baccarin, Peyton List, Chris Chalk and Jessica Lucas. The last episodes of season 5 will air on April 18 and 25 at Fox.
