NBC’s reality dance competition “World of Dance,” launched in 2017, has since gone on to be renewed twice for three seasons overall. Its success has also led to several international editions: one in Poland, another in Thailand, and a third here in the Philippines airing on ABS-CBN. This inaugural season of “World of Dance Philippines,” co-presented by Luis Manzano and Pia Wurtzbach with Billy Crawford, Maja Salvador and Gary Valenciano as judges, kicked off this January in sync with the original USA edition’s third season. The winner for the Philippine contest earns a competitive berth in the main American show.
As ABS-CBN News tells us, the final stage of the contest in “World of Dance Philippines” season 1 ended with the World Finals. Held consecutively over the weekend, it saw the winners of the show’s three divisions go head to head to head, for a chance to represent the country in the world stage. Solo dancer Ken San Jose stood for the Junior Division, duo Luka & Jenalyn was for the Upper Division, while Team Division put forth FCPC Baliktanaw. The final round, “Act’s Choice” last Sunday, April 7, saw FCPC Baliktanaw carry the day to win the World Final.
When the final scores were tallied, based on average between judges’ ratings and viewer votes, the FCPC Baliktanaw dance troupe got a near-perfect 99.05 average between Round 2 and Saturday’s Round One “Mentor’s Choice.” This beat out runner-up Luka & Jenalyn (96.38) and Ken San Jose (94.93). This is a particularly significant victory over the dancing duo, both of whom are actual veterans of the previous two seasons of “World of Dance USA.” To clinch their win, FCPC Baliktanaw danced to an intense medley of songs from the late Filipino Master Rapper Francis Magalona, primarily based on “Man from Manila.”
Hailing from Bulacan, the 11-member FCPC Baliktanaw out-danced 23 other dance groups in the Team Division of “World of Dance” Philippines. Back in Saturday, April 6, the troupe was mentored by Judge Billy Crawford, who selected (as provided by the “Mentor’s Choice” round) the song “Alive” by Lil Jon featuring Offset and 2 Chainz for FCPC’s dance piece. Their final score that evening was 99.47 from the judges and viewers. This, added to their 98.63 average for the Francis M medley, was enough to net them the final victory, a 2-million Peso cash prize, and a spot in qualifiers for “World of Dance USA” season 3, currently airing on NBC.
