Anyone who has followed the superhero movie scene might opine that, for all their SFX-laden goodness and potential box office block-busting power, they are not really geared towards the nominal goal of more “serious” cinematic fare in trying to net a film award, except for technical categories of nomination. The year 2018 seems fit to change that with several films that many viewers are convinced should not only be included for meatier awards nominations, but win them. An example is Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther”, which did have nominations at the recently-concluded Golden Globes. But another, animated, film has stolen its thunder.
As Comic Book Resources tells it, while “Black Panther” of the MCU superhero franchise managed to get three nominations for the 76th Golden Globe awards just this Sunday, January 6, its quest to win something major like Best Drama Picture and Best Drama Actor has been frustrated by runaway favorites like “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Fortunately, another Marvel superhero film is on hand to win one for the storied comic-book label; it is only too bad that the production credit goes not to Disney but to Sony, which shares the movie rights to the lead character in question. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” won Best Animated Feature-Length Film.
The 3D-animated film only managed to snag that one 2019 Golden Globe nomination for animated film, and it was up against heavy hitters like, again, Disney productions like “Incredibles 2” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet”. Again as stated, it won. This would make “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” the first superhero film to get received best picture, even if for the animated category. The Golden Globe in question was received by producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the latter of whom also wrote the story. Interestingly, their award was presented by cast members of “Black Panther”.
“Thank you for recognizing such an unusual movie,” said Lord in their acceptance speech to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “This is a ridiculous collaboration among many filmmakers, starting with our directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman.” Shout-outs were also given to the late creators of the Spider-Man character, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, as well as the creators of the movie’s main Spider-character Miles Morales, namely Brian Michael Bendis and Sarah Pichelli.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, “Into the Spider-Verse” stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, a young Brooklyn teenager from an alternate universe who gets bitten by a strange spider that gives him powers similar to popular superhero Spider-Man. He is inspired to use these abilities to help others after Spider-Man is killed in action, and his first adventure leads him to meet a Spider-Man from another dimension, along with various other Spider-people from the multi-verse.
