Media awards season usually begins in earnest at the beginning of a year; and indeed we have our first major ceremony happening just as January 2019 goes into its first full seven-day week. The 76th Golden Globe Awards, honoring the best in film and television for 2018 courtesy of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has taken place the evening of Sunday, January 6, at the Beverly Hilton. Hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, the latest Golden Globes saw some wins in both forms of media that were either expected (from box office/ratings performance) or completely out of the blue.
As The New York Times spells out, 2018 became the best year ever for musicals in film according to the Golden Globes, considering the significant amount of them that have gotten not just nominations but victories. One need look no further than at 20th Century Fox’s’ “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Warner-MGM’s “A Star is Born”, and Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” with their nominations received. To this, the Queen biopic won “Best Drama” and a “Best Drama Actor” for Rami Malek’s memorable Freddie Mercury performance, while Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s duet song “Shallow” for “A Star is Born” got Best Original Song.
One more triumph of note for the film portion of the Golden Globes this year is the winner for Best Animated Feature Film. Disney had two entries, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and, with Pixar, “Incredibles 2”. There is also an anime movie and a US-German co-production set in Japan. But ultimately the Golden Globe went to Marvel and Sony-Columbia’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, perhaps the first animated superhero film thus honored, and acclaimed by Marvel Comics fans as arguably the best movie version of Spider-Man.
On the television front, the best performers of the evening are with FX, which have both spy thriller “The Americans” which ended at six season on May 2018, and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”. Netflix also had new success with comedy web series “The Kominsky Method”, while Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” saw its Golden Globe nominations reduced to two from the 75th Awards, none of which won this time. Both “The Kominsky Method” and the second season of “American Crime Story” got two wins each. The former won Best TV Musical/Comedy and Best Performance Actor for TV Musical/Comedy (Michael Douglas), while the latter had Best Miniseries/TV Film and Best Performance Actor for TV Drama with Darren Criss.
This Golden Globe Awards also debuted a new non-competitive achievement award for TV that is the counterpart to the Cecile B. DeMille Award for film. This is the Carol Burnett Award, with the namesake actress herself being its first honoree.
