While fans of the medieval fantasy genre wait out their near-eternal vigil for the release of George R.R. Martin’s penultimate book on “A Song of Ice and Fire”, fans of the more “casual” and television bent are instead waiting for the eighth and final season of the book series’ HBO adaptation, “Game of Thrones”. The release of that parting segment of the saga that has thrilled audiences since premiering in 2011 had been delayed in order to time its shooting schedules in wintertime, as per the current setting’s timeline. While it was said to arrive this year, nobody knew when.
Well, everybody knows now as CBS News tells it. HBO went on social media today via their official Twitter page for “Game of Thrones” to not just announce the premiere date of season 8, but also to share another teaser for the followers of the War of Five Kings in Westeros. Without further ado, the last few episodes of the multi-awarded big-budget TV series will be on April 14. They then added another epic teaser to hype fans for the final existential confrontation between life and death in “Game of Thrones”, separate from the teaser footage at the Golden Globes.
The teaser consists of three of the last remaining survivors of the heroic House Stark – Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Arya (Maisie Williams) walking through the dark corridors of the underground catacombs of their ancestral home, castle Winterfell. Along the way they pass the graves of their dead kin, marked by statues in their likenesses: Lyanna Stark, their (or in Jon’s case, his actual Stark parent); Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), Sansa and Arya’s mother; and Ned Stark (Sean Bean) their Lord father (or Jon’s uncle in actuality).
As words from the fallen Starks echo, the three living ones reach the end of a path to find three statues that look like them. Immediately afterwards a creeping, absolutely cold presence makes its way into the catacombs from behind them, spurring Jon and Arya to prepare for battle while Sansa waits behind them. HBO captioned the teaser video #ForTheThrone.
“Game of Thrones” on its farewell season will consists only of six episodes, the shortest in the whole production run. In return, all episodes will run far beyond the average hour-long TV series format and will instead be, as HBO boss Richard Plepler would describe them, “six movies”. Show-runners Dave Benioff and D.B. Weiss also directed these last episodes alongside Michael Sapochik and David Nutter. Brian Cogman and Dave Hill co-wrote the scripts with Benioff.
