Just when you thought all possible awards for achievements in the four major entertainment media – movies, TV, theatre and music – have finally been given out for the year, there is suddenly another one in the months winding down to the yearend holidays. But that is to be expected of the Annual American Music Awards which does its presenting in the latter months. This 2018 however, the awards are held early at the Los Angeles Microsoft Theater on Tuesday night, and it would be the venue where AMA history would be made by superstar Taylor Swift.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Taylor Swift, on the running for several categories off her latest studio album “Reputation”, would go on to win the 2018 American Music Awards’ Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Album, and Tour of the Year. With this streak she broke the record for most awards won in a single AMA by a female artist. Swift also got plenty of attention as the opening act of the awarding ceremony this October 9, where she performed “I Did Something Bad” from “Reputation”, which released back in November 2017. This would be the first time she had a stage performance in a music awards ceremony after three years.
In winning Artist of the Year for 2018, Swift managed to best other chart-toppers such as Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, Drake and Post Malone. Her acceptance speech for that particular AMA win became her platform for expounding on her new political stance after making a point to remain neutral on such issues in the past. She had recently broken her silence in politics by pledging her support for two candidates running in her home state of Tennessee. She also encouraged the audience to vote in the 2018 US Midterm Elections.
Other notable winners in the 2018 American Music Awards aside from Taylor Swift include Camila Cabello (New Artist of the Year and Favorite Song – Pop/Rock for “Havana”), Post Malone (Favorite Male Artist – Pop/Rock and Favorite Album – Rap/Hip-Hop), Migos (Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock), Kane Brown (Favorite Male Artist – Country, Favorite Album – Country and Favorite Song – Country for “Heaven”), Carrie Underwood (Favorite Female Artist – Country), Florida Georgia Line Favorite Duo or Group – Country), Cardi B (Favorite Artist – Rap/Hip-Hop and Favorite Song – Rap/Hip-Hop for “Bodak Yellow”), Khalid (Favorite Male Artist – Soul/R&B), Rihanna (Favorite Female Artist – Soul/R&B), and BTS (Favorite Social Artist) among many more.
