It has been said that sometimes, a program idea that seems good during conception might instead cause backlash when introduced to the public, but they might change their mind once they see more of it in trailers. That was the story of “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power”, a remake by Dreamworks Animation of the Mattel toy-line and 1985 Filmation animated series “Shera: Princess of Power”. The most scathing comments on the planned remake are the more boyish build of the title character and a greater focus on female characters in general. The producers went ahead with development and, in a new trailer, may have won support with an original take on the series’ backstory.
Polygon reports that another trailer, following one last September, has been released Dreamworks TV for “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power”, the new animated series remake developed by Noelle Stevenson, creator of comic-book title “Lumberjanes”. The new preview premiered on the 2018 New York Comic Con, running October 4 to 7, and has been uploaded online. A great deal of new scenes from the show’s initial episodes serve to further flesh out the origin story of main character Adora/She-Ra (Aimee Carrero), diverging from the original narrative of the eighties cartoons.
The one important element of this “She-Ra” remake is the, for now, complete excision of the “twins” plot featuring the original Adora’s twin brother Prince Adam, aka He-Man, and his Masters of the Universe. This time, rather than having He-Man trigger Adora’s defection from Hordak’s Evil Horde, this Adora is separated from her world-conquering comrades during a mission. Finding a glowing magical sword in a hidden grove, Adora is spurred by a mysterious voice to use the power to save the world from Hordak, and the sword transforms her into a Princess of Power, She-Ra.
One other element in the trailer that makes the upcoming series interesting is the ensuing of reality even after Adora receives her true quest. After falling in with the Princess-led rebellion against the Horde, she finds herself treated with caution at best and suspicion at worst, despite proving her powers and dedication to fight for their sake. Worse, Adora had a good friend left behind at the Horde. Catra (AJ Michalka) is confused when Adora refuses to return to Horde Prime, and when she actually starts fighting against Hordak as She-Ra, the feeling of betrayal turns them into bitter enemies.
While some viewers of the trailer may have revised their opinions on social media, “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power” remains rather divisive with original-series fans, new followers and more politically-aligned commentators. The series will premiere on streaming media giant Netflix, this coming November 16.
