#INSTAGRAMDOWN: Outage Causes Twitter FRENZY

It is not shaping up to be a good time it seems for Instagram, the widely-used image sharing social media platform and part of major social network Facebook. A week ago its co-founders and CEOs Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger announced their departure from the company to pursue other creative ventures. This was said to be due to increasing creative and directional differences with Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg. This Monday former FB product designer and Instagram product VP Adam Mosseri was announced as the new CEO of the service. Only days after that, Instagram suddenly went down for a time.
CNBC reports that on Wednesday, October 3, Instagram suddenly lost service around the world for about 45 minutes to an hour. Its mobile app version was unable to connect with a message saying it could not refresh the feed, while the desktop website produced only the error message: “5xx Server Error”, without any accompanying image.
According to the DownDetector service, which detects loss of service for websites and social media apps and maps which regions were significantly affected, the Instagram loss of service was felt in North America, Europe, Australia, India, Singapore and other countries. Both Instagram and parent company Facebook remained silent through the time the former was down.
When service finally returned before Wednesday was out, Instagram offered no explanation beyond a statement to CNBCthat went: “We’re aware that some users had trouble accessing Instagram. We have worked quickly and the issue is now resolved.” During the interim, annoyed Instagram users went to an alternative social media platform, as is the norm when services are interrupted, in order to both vent their frustrations at losing something important in their feed, and to make some funny remarks about what happened, all under the umbrella of the hash-tag #instagramdown.
Instagram is one of the most-used social media apps today, with a monthly active user count of about one billion globally. Most of these came aboard when the platform began offering features such as instant messaging and short video sharing, some of which were implemented under the auspices of Facebook.
