“Star Wars”, especially under the Disney umbrella, has been coming under increasing fire from heavily opinionated fans of the franchise who have become some of its greatest detractors. Following the divisive reception to “The Last Jedi” last year, and then the poor box office turnout for “Solo: A Star Wars Story”, it seemed as if the franchise is in trouble. But that only applies to films, as Disney, Lucasfilm Animation and Polygon Pictures are gearing up their promotion for the latest 3D-animated series “Star Wars Resistance”. A new trailer has also come out to more light on the new characters.
According to The Verge, Disney and Lucasfilm have uploaded another featurette for “Star Wars Resistance” on the “Star Wars” YouTube channel. After last August’s preview on the main characters of the new animated series, set only a few months from the events of the 2015 revival “The Force Awakens”, the production team now has a primer on the other important members of the cast. The featurette showcases the characters themselves, alongside their respective star-fighter racers, plus also includes interviews with their voice actors. Thus, the setting of Colossus station in “Resistance” is fleshed out further.
Featured on the preview are the rest of the pilots on the Ace team, mercenary star-fighter pilots who protect the isolated fuelling station of the ocean planet Colossus in the Outer Rim. When not being scrambled to fight off threats to Colossus, they engage in regular star-fighter races for extra pay and glory. The other Aces aside from main character Kaz and his Team Fireball crew are: Torra Doza (Myrna Velasco), daughter of Colossus station’s chief; ace pilot and sponsor magnet Hype Fazon (Donald Faison), ex-Imperial TIE pilot Griff Halloran (Stephen Stanton), ice queen Freya Fenris (Mary Elizabeth McGlynn) and crash-prone stunt flyer Bo Keevil.
“Star Wars Resistance” focuses on Kazuda “Kaz” Xiono (Christopher Sean), a young pilot for General Leia Organa’s Resistance movement against the Imperial remnant First Order. Under orders from Resistance pilot commander Poe Dameron, he becomes an observer at the Colossus Station, keeping an eye out for encroaching First Order activity. As he befriends the people on Colossus, he must learn to differentiate true companions from potential First Order plants and generally unpleasant people. Actual “Star Wars” sequel trilogy actors like Oscar Isaac as Poe and Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma are also in the cast.
Dave Filoni, director-writer for “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels” is also in charge for the new series, sporting a different cel-shaded 3D animation style reminiscent of Japanese anime. “Star Wars Resistance” is due to premiere October 7 at the Disney Channel, will a follow-up release on Disney XD in the future.
