At the end of the post-credits sequence of the mind-blowing MCU film “Avengers: Infinity War”, we saw Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury send a message on a strange communicator before he was erased by Thanos’ finger-snap. That scene of course was tease towards the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, and a prequel to boot: “Captain Marvel” starring Brie Larson. Slated for release next year, a few snapshots of the production have been shared online featuring the lead star in costume, though a different shade from her comic-book counterpart. Finally however, images of the properly-colored costume are out.
This new series of major reveals for Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” are courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, which features the movie on their September issue, coming into print on the 14th. Much like “Wonder Woman” did for Warner Bros. Pictures and DC in 2017, this will be the first MCU movie with a solo female lead (compared to the hero-heroine tandem of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” last July). This time, the prominent photos of Brie Larson in costume as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel have her in red and blue with gold trim, as she is depicted nowadays.

Also made public is the first significant plot preview for the film’s storyline. It also eschews conventions for the usual superhero origin, where the start of the movie shows how the main character becomes empowered. According to the blurb, Larson’s Carol, an Air Force pilot from the 1990s, will already possess her abilities from the start, and the introductory portion instead explains how she would leave Earth, become integrated into a galactic alien civilization (explaining her initial dull uniform), and thus be away when the overarching MCU storyline takes place.
Brie Larson gives her take on Carol Danvers’ personality: “She can’t help but be herself. She can be aggressive, and she can have a temper, and she can be a little invasive and in your face.” Anna Boden, co-directing “Captain Marvel” with Ryan Fleck, also adds: “This is not a superhero who’s perfect or otherworldly…What makes her special is just how human she is…At her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity — and all of its messiness.”
“Captain Marvel” is written by the team of Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, and stars Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Gemma Chan and Clark Gregg. Jackson reprises his MCU role as a younger, two-eyed, Nick Fury, alongside Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser from 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” and Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson from “Agents of SHIELD”. The film premieres March 2019.
