Just this past April, when a partly-omnicidal cosmic entity wiped out half of all life-forms in the universe (along with a majority of Earth’s mightiest heroes) in “Avengers: Infinity War”, one final scene shows a desperate call for held being answered by a star logo that casual fans of Marvel (the MCU movie audiences) might not recognize. This is a teaser of course for “Captain Marvel” starring Brie Larson, the first film headlined by a super heroine and first with a female director. Following several teasers recently shown on Entertainment Weekly, a first preview trailer was finally uploaded for consideration.
The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Marvel Entertainment has brought to bear its first good-length look at what shall be in store for MCU followers with “Captain Marvel”, a prequel and period-centric installment to the cinematic universe similar to 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”. It is also a new attempt by Marvel Studios to launch a film franchise using a Marvel superhero that, despite bearing the label’s name, is no first-rank recognizable character like her fellow Captain or Iron Man, but more similar in relative obscurity to the Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man.
Marvel’s trailer begins with the titular Captain Marvel (Larson) crashing from space to Earth and landing in a Blockbuster Video store, the better to sell its time setting in the 1990s. It becomes obvious that the Captain is a fish out of water despite looking human, having served as a soldier of an alien empire for some time, but apparently still having memories of living on Earth. She is taken into the care of Nick Fury, a former Cold-War spy with an aimless purpose as an Agent of SHIELD, until his meeting with the Captain sets him on the path to becoming who he is in other, “present-day”, MCU films.
Here is the Disney-Marvel movie magic at play. Fury is portrayed by his usual actor Samuel L. Jackson, but has been de-aged by CGI to make him look like he just walked off the set of “Pulp Fiction”. The same applies to Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, making his MCU film return after five seasons of ABC’s “Agents of SHIELD”. Anyway, the trailer goes on to show Captain Marvel trying to reconcile her past memories as Earthling and Air Force pilot Carol Danvers with her life as an intergalactic soldier, at least in time before Earth becomes a battleground between her alien army and another.
“Captain Marvel” also stars Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Honsou, Lashana Lynch, Lee Pace and Gemma Chan. The movie is the first MCU film premiering in 2019 on March, followed by “Avengers 4” in May.
