Ask a Trekkie, a fan of the long-running science fiction multimedia franchise “Star Trek”, what the status of the property’s TV series – its original format – is, and be prepared for a lengthy in-depth rundown. The most recent iteration is “Star Trek: Discovery” on the CBS All Access subscription service, and while its inaugural season has been critically acclaimed, the fact that it takes place as a near-immediate prequel to the hallowed Original Series of the sixties does raise some eyebrows. Then perhaps this new proposed “Star Trek” show might by more to their liking, bringing back revered actor Patrick Stewart.
The Hollywood Reporter has it that there will be a new “Star Trek” series that will premiere on CBS All Access in the future and that Patrick Stewart has signed on for it. He will be reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the starship Enterprise-D from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” which came into TV on first-run syndication back in 1987. While no specific details about the new show has been shared, it is known that it will be a sequel to the Next-Generation era of “Star Trek” featuring Picard on “the next chapter of his life”.
“Star Trek: Discovery” show-runner Alex Kurtzman gave a formal statement on Stewart officially joining the cast of the upcoming series saying, “With overwhelming joy, it’s a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the Star Trek fold. For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here.” Patrick Stewart himself shared the news this Saturday, August 4, when he stepped into a Las Vegas “Star Trek” convention, giving a brief narration on the time he spent during production of “The Next Generation”, the period after, and his surprise return.
Following some anecdotes about the people he had met who spoke to him of the positive effects “Star Trek” had in their lives, Stewart dropped the bombshell for the new series where he will also serve as executive producer. During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort… how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership,” he had said. “I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason — to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times.
The new “Star Trek” series is set to premiere in fall of 2018, with a new episode rolling out monthly on CBS All Access streaming. “Star Trek: Discovery”, starring Sonequa Martin-Green, will return with a 13-episode second season in 2019.
