In 1986 the world was thrilled by the Paramount Pictures aircraft action film “Top Gun”, directed by Tony Scott and starring eventual Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise. Audiences loved so much that many inspired men went to US Navy recruiting booths outside theaters to enlist as aspiring aviators. A sequel to “Top Gun” was floated in 2010 with many of the people behind its production, only to enter uncertain waters following the 2012 suicide of director Scott. It was not until 2017 that “Top Gun: Maverick” started development, with Cruise and Val Kilmer reprising their roles, joined by some new faces.
Variety was the first to break the news that “Top Gun: Maverick” has cast an important new character alongside the old ones. It was later reported by USA Today that Paramount Pictures has confirmed actor Miles Teller will be portraying the role of the yet-to-be named son of Goose, the late radar-intercept officer (RIO) and best friend of Tom Cruise’s character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell from the original film. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw was played by Anthony Edwards as a jokester and loyal (figurative) wingman to Maverick, until his memorably tragic death in a training accident halfway through the “Top Gun” plot.
Miles Teller, 31, starred in 2017’s “Only the Brave” and the Academy Award-winning 2014 drama “Whiplash”. In being cast as Goose Junior, he edged out two other candidates brought up by entertainment news sources like Nicholas Hoult of the rebooted “X-Men” films from 20th Century Fox, and Glen Powell from the Netflix-original romantic comedy “Set It Up”. On his Twitter page Teller announced his casting by dropping a line from his character’s father: “I feel the need” (completed by Maverick with “The need for speed!”)
Powell also got on social media to comment on losing a chance to be Goose Jr., with a joking contemplation on whether or not he will remove the “Top Gun” posters on his bedroom walls.

With Joseph Kosinski taking up the directorial helm from the long-departed Tony Scott, “Top Gun: Maverick” sees the former hotshot Naval aviator as an older and perhaps wiser veteran flight instructor at the USN Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program, formerly the Fighter Weapons School but best known as the Top Gun School. Actor Val Kilmer also returns as Maverick’s rival Tom “Iceman” Kazanski, with Miles Teller as Goose Junior being one of the new Top Gun candidates under Maverick’s watch.
“Top Gun: Maverick” has been filming since May in San Diego, California. Paramount is looking to a July 2019 premiere.
