In this day and age, fandoms have become a significantly powerful force in entertainment. The crystallization of just how much pull fan communities have on the franchises they favor can be seen in the string of pop conventions that tend to take place at this time of year. One can see it from the media blitz and celebrity frenzy that took place over the third weekend of July during the San Diego Comic Con. Other countries have similar conventions coming up, including the Philippines. In fact, that one is happening this coming weekend, and they have major guest stars too.
As told by ABS-CBN News, the AsiaPOP Comicon 2018 is coming, and it will start at high noon this Friday, July 26, at the SMX Convention Center not far from Mall of Asia. This is perhaps the biggest gathering of geek fandoms in the Philippines, not just for comics but for pop culture in general, and it has been held for enough years to such success that it now boasts quite the number of corporate exhibitors, and they are sure to give Filipino fans the lowdown on what is next for their favorite franchises on comic books, TV and film.
First on the line of big surprises for the AsiaPOP Comicon 2018 is streaming giant Netflix, which is expected to host a panel on the afternoon of Saturday, July 28 at 3 PM featuring no less than actors Finn Jones and Mike Coulter, Iron Fist and Luke Cage respectively and stars of their namesake Marvel Netflix streaming series. Much will be discussed regarding season 2 of “Iron Fist”, releasing September.
Just past noon on Sunday, July 29, Marvel will get its turn and a whole exhibit hall – designated “M” – for its own discussions and reveals regarding the Cinematic Universe after “Avengers: Infinity War”. The next scheduled film release for “Captain Marvel” in 2019 is a guaranteed topic to bring up. Unfortunately, Hall M can only hold 1,000 guests maximum, and they have only Friday and Saturday to buy their passes.
And after Marvel, its parent company Disney will follow through with “Hall D” where their upcoming films will have their turn for promotion, such as this year’s “Christopher Robin” and “Mary Poppins” returns, among others.
There are more celebrities waiting in the wings too, like Tye Sheridan from “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Ready Player One”, “Supernatural” cast member Osric Chau, iconic Filipino comic artists who have worked for Marvel and DC like Whilce Portacio and Lan Medina, plus celebrity cosplayers, vinyl artists and figure scuptors galore.
For those who would like to attend the AsiaPOP Comicon 2018 in SMX Convention Center over the weekend, they can come in for a day on a P650 ticket, or the whole thing for P1,150. Note however that certain events like autograph sessions with Tye Sheridan Finn Jones carry their own separate entry price tags. You may visit AsiaPOP Comicon’s official website for more information.
