It’s a great time for Marvel’s Friendly Neighborhood web-swinging superhero Spider-Man. In the comic books he has been reunited – after a fashion – with his one true love Mary Jane Watson. He appeared in “Avengers: Infinity War” last May; and even though he “died”, he is slated for a solo MCU film sequel by next year. In the meantime Sony, which shares film rights to the character with Marvel Studios, continues to produce their own standalone films for the Spider-franchise, one of them being the 3D-animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse”. Now, there is more news on that front as new cast members have been revealed.
Entertainment Weekly tells of the new cast additions to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” from Sony and Columbia Pictures, which were revealed during the 2018 San Diego Comic Con last week. During Sony’s panel at the convention’s most famous conference venue of Hall H, three names were mentioned that will be providing voice talents for the animated film, as more alternate versions of Spider-Man from across multiple dimensions. Now joining the Spider-voices of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson and Hailee Steinfeld are Kimiko Glenn, John Mulaney and multi-award-winning Hollywood actor Nicholas Cage.
Of these, the first three actors Moore, Johnson and Steinfeld were on hand at the panel with “Into the Spider-verse” producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord where their new cast-mates were publicly announced alongside their roles: Cage will play the black-dressed lethal vigilante Spider-Man Noir, Glenn is the young mechanical suit pilot Peni Parker, and Mulaney will voice humanoid pig Peter Porker, the Amazing Spider-Ham. Their characters were also featured in some new unfinished film footage of the animated “Spider-Man” presented by Lord and Miller.
The plot for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse” has been further elaborated on by the shown footage at SDCC. While it is known to be a movie adaptation of a Marvel Comics storyline for Spider-Man, the film is also established as an alternate retelling in the spirit of the “Spider-verse” central theme of multiple dimensions with Spider-Man, but in different forms.
From the shared scenes, the movie’s central character is the Miles Morales Spider-Man (Shameik Moore), who lives in a parallel universe where he gained similar powers to the original Peter Parker Spider-Man. Miles takes up the costumed identity after Parker’s death in his world, only to encounter an older Peter in costume (Jake Johnson) who tells him of other Spider-people gathering from across the dimensions to face an existential threat to them all. The two are joined in initial trailers by a Spider-powered Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), a normal version of whom is Miles’ classmate.
Sony and Columbia Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse” will premiere in cinemas on December 14.
