Once upon a time, there were three little girls who went to the Police Academy; and they were each assigned very hazardous duties. But a reclusive private investigator named Charlie Townsend took them away from all that to work for him. While these “Angels” worked through the late 1970s and early eighties, with a roster change or two, three other little girls grew up to be very different women in the 21st Century. They would work for Charlie from 2000 to 2003; so did another trio of girls in 2011. Now, the “Charlie’s Angels” franchise is looking for new recruits, and they have been cast.
As told by USA Today, a new cinematic revival of the “Charlie’s” TV and film series, which has been in discussion at Sony Pictures Entertainment since 2017, has finally gone and announced the three actresses to be cast as a new generation of Angels. First up is Kristen Stewart, still known perhaps to this day for her role as vampire’s girlfriend Bella Swann from Summit Entertainment’s “Twilight” movies of 2008-12. Becoming a new generation of Charlie’s Angel might just be the ticket to finally expand the list of characters she is most famous for portraying.
Stewart will be accompanied on her Angelic crime-fighting by British actresses Ella Balinska and Naomi Scott, the latter having recently been part of Lionsgate’s 2017 “Power Rangers” film. There is also the possibility that they may not be assuming American accents for this upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” movie, as a revealed plot point has it that Charlie Townsend’s detective agency has grown into a true international security and intelligence outfit. Stewart, Scott and Balinska’s characters will be just one of many 3-Angel teams doing detective and security work for the agency, under their immediate handler Bosley, now female and played by Elizabeth Banks.
Banks also happens to be the director, producer and co-writer of the “Charlie’s Angels” revival. In a statement she remarks, “Charlie’s Angels, for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the 70s…This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels.”
Time will tell if this new film version of the Angels could do as good or better at the box office as the first one, starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu in a comedic take. Their 2000 and 2003 “Angels” films were financially successful despite mixed reviews, globally grossing $265 million and $259.2 million respectively. The new movie is set to premiere sometime in 2019.
