Kawit, Cavite can be argued to be like New York (City), New York in terms of its geographical naming, with its likely etymology (Tagalog for “hook”, probably referring to the hook-shaped peninsula where the municipality lies near its base) believed to have been Hispanicized into “cauite”, then Cavite. But perhaps for the last two decades, especially with prospective resort-goers from Manila, Kawit is the home of the Mediterranean-inspired Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park at Brgy. Binakayan. A sprawling complex with water park, dining establishments, and even wildlife sanctuaries, the ICHLP shocked Kawit and nearby vacationers with a shocking announcement.
ABS-CBN News reports that Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park is planning to close its operations towards the end of July next month, ending a 20-year period of offering an accessible resort venue to residents along the south of Manila Bay and vacationers from across the country. This was officially revealed by the hotel-resort in a post on their Facebook page this Friday, June 29. The post expressed pleasure with the business partners, clients and the many regularly-arriving guests of the ICHLP for all that time, and they were happy and honored to have served Filipino hospitality “beyond the ordinary”.
Barring this surprise bit of news, there were already signs manifesting that Island Cove, owned and operated by the prominent Remulla family of Cavite, was about to close its doors. One of their latest promotions had been a “last chance room sale” offering upwards to 40% in discounts across all room accommodations in their hotel, running since Wednesday this week to the same day in July. The closing date listed in Island Cove’s announcement was the day after, on June 28. There were no other details presented by the resort.
On the surface, it is a puzzle as to why the Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park is shutting down. However, the state-run Philippine News Agency has covered a management team announcement within the ICHLP on Monday this week, June 25. There have been implications then that the resort area is being sold by the Remulla family to new owners, the reason being that the clan was shifting priorities towards the public service activities and political careers of its members to be able to focus on managing the family business. Journalist and one-time politician Gilbert C. Remulla happens to be managing director of Island Cove.
There is also no information on any potential buyers of the property, though the closure of operations is apparently part of the purchase conditions given.
