One opinion on the lackluster performance of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” in the box office since May is that nobody wanted to watch a “Star Wars” film where Han Solo is portrayed by anyone other than veteran actor Harrison Ford. The character is simply ingrained in the public image of Ford; but a space smuggler is not the only franchise role he is known for. There is also Dr. Henry Jones Jr., better known as “Indiana Jones”, a role Ford has not played since a decade ago. And it would seem Indy fans might have to wait some more.
According to USA Today, Walt Disney Studios made an announcement on Tuesday, July 10, that a planned fifth “Indiana Jones” movie from their Lucasfilm subsidiary will be taking a bit longer to arrive than anticipated. Originally slated by Disney for the middle of 2020, it has been pushed back to July of 2021. The House of Mouse did not elaborate on the reason for the delays, but reaffirmed that the upcoming adventure film will indeed have Harrison Ford back as the now-old Indy, and Steven Spielberg is also slated to direct, in what is being hyped as the final adventure.
While no official word was given as to why the release date for “Indiana Jones 5” was pushed back, The Hollywood Reporter posits that there has been trouble with the scripting of the film, and that a new draft is being ordered by Lucasfilm. Working on that is Jonathan Kasdan, son of Lawrence Kasdan who screen-wrote the first “Indiana Jones” movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. And this is not the only film project under the massive umbrella of Disney that has seen a schedule change. A Marvel Studios production was also moved, but for them it was advanced from July to February of 2021.
“Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981 introduced the world to bullwhip-cracking adventurer archeologist Indiana Jones, who went after priceless legendary artifacts while finding himself unwillingly involved in plots by Nazi agents and Thugee assassins. Harrison Ford starred while Steven Spielberg directed and George Lucas wrote the story for this film and its immediate successors: “The Temple of Doom” (1984), “The Last Crusade” (1989), and “The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, which premiered in 2008 and showcased a much older Indy in the 1950s fighting against Soviet agents for a relic of potential extraterrestrial origin.
In the same statement that announced the delay of the “Indiana Jones 5” premiere, Disney also revealed that a sequel to Angelina Jolie’s 2014 dark fairytale adaptation, “Maleficent II”, has been set to be released in May 29 of 2020.
