CHRIS EVANS Tweets BIRTHDAY Greeting for His Film Character “CAPTAIN AMERICA” on FOURTH OF JULY

The Fourth of July for 2018, falling in the middle of the week, the celebration and observances has been low-key in the US. Yes there were fireworks, though there was some concern over pet animals spooked by pyrotechnics. President Donald Trump spent Wednesday at his Virginia golf course, taking time between holes and celebratory picnic to tweet his greetings and post a video message with regards to military veterans. To comic book fans, July 4 is recalled as the birthday of the most patriotic American superhero: Captain America. So did his most recent actor mark the occasion, as it was the 100th year of the character he portrayed; at least his version from the MCU.

Entertainment Weekly tells us that actor Chris Evans themed his Twitter post greetings for the Fourth of July around the fact that his character of Captain America is officially a centenarian. Observant viewers of the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film with Evans as the star-spangled man with the plan, “Captain America: The First Avenger” in 2011, featured a scene with Steve Rogers’ Certificate of Acceptability from the Army recruiting office, listing his birthdate as July 4, 1918. Evans’ Fourth of July tweet read: “I love this country and I’m proud of how far we’ve come. Be safe today! Also, Happy Birthday to a very good friend of mine. I hear 100 is the new 20.”

It needs to be clarified however that it is the MCU version of Captain America that is 100 years old as of 2018. For the original comic-book version, one issue did confirm Steve Rogers’ birthday as July 4, but the birth year was 1917 instead, thus making the print character 101 years old. The comic Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby for Marvel predecessor Timely Comics.

The first issue was on sale in December 1940, a year before the Pearl Harbor attack that brought Americans into World War II. Stan Lee would first work on the Captain America character in issue 3 of the original Timely comic book, foreshadowing Lee reviving Cap as a member of the Avengers on the now-Marvel Comics brand. As for the MCU version, following “The First Avenger” Cap (as played by Evans) was in two “Captain America” sequels, three cameos on other MCU movies, and finally all the “Avengers” films thus far, the latest being “Infinity War” which premiered this May.

Though his contract for the role with Marvel Studios has already run out, Chris Evans will reprise as Captain America once more next year in the fourth “Avengers” film. For now, he is celebrating his character’s first century of in-universe big-screen life, alongside the festivities for the Fourth of July.
